Miley chewed on her lip, glancing down at the pregnancy test that lay on her bathroom counter. She knew in all retrospect that she had to wait until the five minutes were up but a small part of her hoped that if she stared at it for the next thirty seconds it might just pop up and relieve the incredible tension.
Three months earlier
Brown eyes glittered at her across the table. Martini in his hand, smirk on his lips, Miley could've sworn Nick hadn't changed a single bit from the day she met him in the karaoke bar 11 years ago.
"Want another bite?" He asked, referring to the piece of cheesecake they chose to share.
She nodded, reaching for her fork. Nick shook his head, stretching his hand across the table and resting it on hers. He shot her a wink, taking his fork in his free hand and cutting off a bite of the decadent dessert. He brought it to her mouth, chuckling softly when she leaned forward and ate off it. He pulled away once she'd finished, setting his fork down. She hummed, taking the opportunity to repeat his action. She couldn't say she was surprised when he didn't miss a beat, swiftly taking the bite from her fork.
"How's Demi?" She asked a few minutes later, once they'd finished eating and she was now on her second drink.
"She's good. Same as always really, weird and cute and just, bubbly."
"Cute?" She raised a eyebrow, nudging him softly. "Are the rumours true Mr. Jonas? Do you have a thing for your best friend?"
He laughed, taking a swig of his drink. "I just meant in the innocent way, but I'd be lying if I said she wasn't nice to look at every once in a while."
She noticed the slight blush on his cheeks, inwardly gushing at how adorable he was. "She's a damn good kisser too."
Nick shot her a look and now it was her turn to blush. "You've never kissed her?" She asked.
"YOU HAVE?" He pushed, maybe a little too loudly.
"Hell yeah. Nicholas come on, two non-straight girls smoking weed and hanging out alone? Did you really think nothing would happen?"
"I didn't think of it at all but now I don't think I'll ever stop."
"Pig." She teased, playfully whacking his arm.
Nick opened his mouth to speak but stopped himself when he sensed an unwanted presence. He sucked in a breath at the faint sound of a camera click. "Miley.."
She glanced up from her drink, humming questioningly.
"I think there's paps, outside." He murmured, seeing a wave of panic wash over her.
"They can't know I'm here Nick, Liam's away, they'll think-"
"I know, just follow my lead."
Miley stayed silent, watching intently as Nick pulled a twenty out of his wallet and slid it under their plate. He stood up, tugging his hood up.
Everything else came in flashes.
Leaving the restaurant, getting into Nicks car, driving through the dark, ending up at Nick and Joe's apartment. Cracking open the last champagne bottle on his shelf. Kissing Nick. God, she could do that forever. Losing her clothes. The best sex she's had in years. And then it was the next morning and there was no sign of a body next to her. There was however, a glass of water and a couple aspirin. The note beside it made a smile tug at her lips.
Hey miles,
Had to go to the studio. Hope this helps your head. I'll see you when this comes full circle again I guess :)
- NickShe sighed, reaching over and grabbing the pills. She swallowed them and slowly climbed out of his bed, taking her time to find her clothes and put them back on.
The door creaked as she opened it and a familiar voice exploded from the other side.
"Ya know Nicholas, I was just gonna tease you about all the noise but.." He scoffed in disbelief ."When did you start fucking engaged chicks dude?"
Miley chewed on her lip, stepping out in full view. Her eyes landed on her engagement ring in his hands and she suddenly felt guilty about the wedding band in her pocket. "Hey Joe."
Joe's eyes widened and he stood in awed silence. His lips parted as he took a slow breath, trying to find the fragile way to put what he was thinking. "What the fuck?" He failed.
She gulped, stepping forward and putting her hand out.
He sighed, placing her ring in her palm and held in a shudder when she slipped it in her pocket along with its other half.
"You never saw me, okay?" She said quietly, walking over to the door and putting her shoes on.
"Miley, I -I can't do that. This means something."
She shook her head, grabbing onto the door handle. "It doesn't. Let it go." Without another word she swung the door open and left, but not before hearing her former best friend tell after her.
"THIS ISNT JUST GONNA GO AWAY."
Now, three months later, Miley finally realized Joe might be right as the result finally came up on her test.
Positive.
