"HAVEN'T YOU HEARD? RUINATIONS ARE BREWED FROM THE PROMOTIONS OF FALSEHOODS."
An air of apprehensiveness surrounded Adalia and she pressed the back of her hand to her cheeks — burning, red, painted by the hands of the devil. A post from Chuck Clayton, the resident asshole of Riverdale, lit up her phone and she felt an ounce of regret settle in her gut. There was something else there, putting a great amount of pressure on her heart — what was this, guilt?
She stood before her locker, phone now tucked away in her bag as she applied a final layer of gloss to her lips. An image of pearls occupying great anger caught her eye, the minuscule mirror she was looking into painting a picture oddly reminiscent of a haunting summer. Next to her stood a sweater vest personified, arms crossed in worry.
Their eyes met through her mirror and that prompted Adalia to hastily shut it, her eyes following after. Don't turn, she demanded. Don't let her see your guilt. Though, that became quite the impossible feat when she felt a soft tap on her shoulder, causing her to turn on her heel.
"What's wrong?" she asked, receiving a soft smile from Adalia. After she realized that she wasn't going to get a reply, she nodded toward where Veronica was standing, her eyes narrowed at the screen of her phone. "Ronnie's gonna go yell at Chuck. You wanna come with?"
Adalia's eyes widened a fraction before she made them smaller as to not inspire Betty's suspicion. Her dark gaze went to Veronica and she put on the mask of a girl she knew far too well: a queen, blood on the tip of her tongue and lips radiating the unforgiving venom of a serpent.
"You're talking to the lion on our social pyramid," she saved, flipping her hair over her shoulders for emphasis. "Putting arrogant cubs in their place is my job."
The smile that spread on Betty's face brought an entire zoo to Adalia's heart and she felt her stomach flutter, butterflies reaching her artificial emotions. When she took her hand and began to lead her to the locker rooms, it occurred to her that it was as if Betty was a puppeteer, making Adalia feel what she wanted her to and bringing her into situations she would never have dreamed of.
"Adalia?" blurted an unsuspecting victim of her shoving, his fists a bright white and cheeks faintly pink as he held onto his towel. "What are you doing here?"
"Don't worry about it," she snapped, allowing Betty to continue tugging her along.
Pearls, now stained, danced around the two girls and moved to face the boy that angered her beyond words could express. Adalia could feel Betty's heartbeat increase at the sight of the shirtless boy and she frowned, removing her hand from her wrist immediately, which brought an equally as hurt frown on Betty's face.
