He gets in the car and turns the engine on. He's a mess of jumbled emotions and not entirely sure what he's doing or where he's going. He wants to go to Josh's house, but he knows that's the worst thing he could do because he doesn't trust himself not to ruin everything as soon as he walks through the door. Besides, he's probably got Halsey over, or his ex-girlfriend, and that would both be awkward and break his heart a little, so he knows he can't do that. As he pulls the car out from that little side street, he knows where he's headed. He steps on the pedal and heads towards the river, fighting back tears. He can cry when he gets there, but first he has to drive. He drives down as many side streets as possible to avoid traffic, and finally pulls up by a little walkway by the river, overlooking the Golden Gate Bridge. He sees a few people walking their dogs, mostly elderly, but for the most part it's empty since most people were at work at this time. He gets out of his car and walks down the pathway towards a big oak tree with twisted roots and branches that hang down low enough to climb and are strong enough to hold him. He can only see the top from where he is, but he knows it well enough to picture it any time. This was where they first kissed. They were new to San Francisco, and fairly new as friends, but they knew since the first day they met that they never had a shot at being just friends, not with the strongest determination or the best intentions. They knew their souls would love each other deeper than that, and they were only waiting until it made sense. He wonders now why they ever thought it would. Josh had asked him on a walk, telling him he'd scoped out this spot and although he didn't really know the city well yet, he was quite sure you wouldn't find a much lovelier place anywhere. He remembers walking and talking about nothing at all and everything they knew and wanted; all the years they had missed and the funny stories that would make each other raise an eyebrow to think they used to be that way, and all their dreams for the future, and he doesn't remember how it happened, but he remembers Josh's hand finding his, and him shaking just a little as they walked. It was like an 'okay', a release to not have to be what anyone expects you to be. The water was shimmering that day, and so was his heart. Then they got to that tree and they laid underneath it with their hands still clasped, and with his other hand Josh reached over and placed it under Tyler's chin and leaned in close so they were breathing in each other's air, and Josh whispered "is this okay?"
