The next day, I woke up, with complication. The alarm clock was practically screaming at me, making me get up and I had no intention of doing so. Quickly, I slapped my hand on the snooze button and I fell asleep for about two minutes before someone knocked, very loudly, on my door. "What?" I asked, crankily."May I come in?"
This time, I was suddenly awake. My eyes widened in panic as I realized it was my dad. "Uh, yeah, sure," I replied. The door opened to reveal a man in his mid forties with clear blue eyes and dark brown hair that was balding. He came in and just stood there, awkwardly. "You can come in and sit down, you know?"
"Oh, um, thanks, thank you," he replied and sat in a chair on the opposite side of the room. "Anywho, I just wanted to talk to you about something.. something important." I nodded my head, motioning him to go on. "So, I know that your ー excuse me for saying this ー mother left and I know that I probably smell of complete and utter betrayal everytime you're near me, but I just want to tell you that.. I don't want things weird between us. I don't.. I don't want you to see me as a monster. I just.. I want to be the father that you know... that you can count on, whenever help is needed. You can call me James, instead of dad, though, I totally understand that and as you gradually get to know me, maybe, just maybe.. you can call me dad?"
"I don't see you as a monster, although you do stink of complete and utter betrayal," we both chuckled. "I want you to be the dad that I can count on, too, but it's going to take some work, considering you missed seventeen years of my life,"
"Yeah, I know," James grinned, sheepishly. "Well, I gotta go. Work is calling my name. If you need anything, just give me a call. Bye, Raina!" I nodded, but then realized something.
"How am I supposed to call you?" I asked, scrunching my eyebrows together. James looked at me, confused. "I don't have a phone. Mom and I were pretty poor, just so you know, so we only had money for food, clothes, and the bills,"
"Oh! Oh, right! Yeah..." James thought for a moment. "Well, um, you can use Jasmine's phone for now and later on, I'll buy you a phone. How's that sound?" I smiled as I nodded.
"Bye, James," I said. "Thanks, by the way.. For letting me stay with you." James smiled and walked out of my room. Suddenly my heart stopped pounding with fear. I got out of bed and eyed the bag in the far corner of my room. I smiled at it, as I thought back to yesterday. I was eyeing a purple dress with sleeves that looked as if it would stop at my elbows, but I didn't have any money with me to buy it, so Jasmine bought it for me, along with purple heels, after some arguing, of course.
I yawned and walked in my bathroom to brush my teeth and shower. After I got out, I slipped on a pair of sweatpants and an oversized t-shirt. Walking downstairs, I met Jasmine's mom with a smile. "Hi, Mrs. Keller. How's your day been?" I said.
"Oh, please, call me Aleena. 'Mrs.' makes me feel old," she laughed, "but my day is going great, thanks so much for asking. How about you? How was your first stay? I know it must be awkward, but I hope that you find yourself at home.."
"My day, so far, is good and I hope that it gets less awkward." I replied. Aleena smiled and walked upstairs while I found my way towards the kitchen where a maid was cooking something that smelled amazing. "Ooh, what are you cooking, it smells beautiful!"
"Just eggs and bacon," the maid chuckled, an Italian accent playing in her voice. I looked at her in disbelief.
"How do you make just eggs and bacon smell that good?!" I asked. The maid just shook her head, in amusement and shrugged. She handed me a piece of bacon which I happily ate. "I can't wait to see what you make for dinner. By the way, what's your name?"
"Giovanna. I have already been told about you. Deepest apologies about mother," Giovanna smiled, sadly. "I had mother who left your age, as well. I can fell your pain, darling,"
I thanked her and headed out of the kitchen. Jasmine was sitting in the living room, watching Spongebob with Stefan. She noticed me and motioned me to sit next her. Slowly, I made my way toward her and sat in the spot next to her. "Mornin' Raina!" She mused.
"Morning," I said. "Spongebob, huh?"
Jasmine nodded, excitingly. "SpongeBob is one of the greatest television shows ever made in time. Stef and I absolutely adore it. It's the epitome of perfection. Patrick is my husband, I seriously love the hell out of him!"
I giggled at her dorky personality. "Anywho," Jasmine continued, "I've been thinking about what we should do today. Should I give you the tour around town or should we just hang out at the park and do some stupid stuff?"
"I could use the tour. I need to know where to get the food," I replied. "After breakfast, though, because Giovanna's cooking is absolutely amazing."
"I know right? I could never understand how she makes eggs and bacon smell that damn good," Jasmine laughed. I nodded in agreement as we continued to watch SpongeBob.
