Ryder carried his mother back to the castle. She wasn't in the best condition considering her other half had been taken away. She was sick and he knew it, he had to find something to help.
"Are you okay?" I whispered checking if she was awake or not. She gave a small groan.
"I'm fine, just tired." She breathed. She kept her eyes closed as her breathing remained shallow. It was a tedious journey back to the castle and I knew that I couldn't take much more. Each step I took drained more energy from my body.
"You can have a rest if you want." She offered.
"Okay. Maybe I will." I stopped to rest and placed my mother down onto the leaves, resting her back gently against a tree trunk. I saw her body start to shiver and I pulled off my jacket placing it over her like a blanket.
"Thank you, being in this human body without my wolf is having its effects on me." She chuckled lightly. I gave a small laugh but I caught on to the despair that clung to her words.
"Did you watch the fight?" My mum asked me. I shook my head as I remembered all the things that had happened. That was when she accepted my rejection.
"No, I stayed in the castle. I couldn't bare to see her hurt in any way. She became defensive when I told her I was worried. She accepted my rejection and that's when I couldn't handle anything anymore. I just cowered away from the world." I cried my tears as I remembered the selfish horrible things I said to her. The way she looked at me... It just made me more defensive and I knew that I shouldn't of said those things but I did, and I hate myself for it.
"That's when I felt it... Her pain rushed into me like a steam train at full force. I ran like I never had run before, my wolf just knew where she was and I held her in my arms... I wanted to save her. I thought Emery had done it but that's when I caught sight of the metal and I realised it wasn't her." I sobbed at full force as the images pelted me violently, striking my heart.
"Emery wasn't a nice girl Ryder. She was manipulative. I saw the power she had over you and you thought it was something more... that it could be something more. But it wasn't." I nodded. I knew that. I thought back on it and I could see the power she held over me, it was if she had tied me up in ropes and was corrupting me from the inside out. Each night she would whisper words in my ears about my family and Tegan especially. I started to believe them and I was blind. I was trapped in the darkness and I didn't know how to find a way out.
"I know." My heart felt heavy with guilt and sadness. I knew that deep down my wolf was right each time he shouted at me. He hated me for rejecting her but Emery somehow held more power over me than my other half.
"Do you miss your wolf?" I questioned. I knew deep down that it would be better to talk about it than lock it in. I watched as her eyes softened.
"Of course I do. I loved her. She was my equal. A large part of me was lost today but I know that it was for a good cause." My mum breathed in deeply as she shifted her weight slightly.
"So how does this thing... Work exactly?" I questioned.
"What, you mean the reviving spell?" She asked. I nodded my head.
"I went to see an old friend who I knew could help me. It could only happen if the being passed recently, she needed a large supply of energy and the only thing that could do that was a wolves power. She said that once it was completed her wolf would come back to life." My eyes widened as I was reminded of this morning when I saw her wolf in the clearing.
"Of course there was only a fifty-percent chance that it would work so I took a chance." She explained.
"I saw her wolf this morning." I told her. Her eyes widened as her jaw dropped in shock and happiness. But immediately after her face became skeptical.
"You aren't joking are you?" She gasped eyeing me seriously. I threw up my hands defensively.
"No of course not! Why would I joke about my mate??!" I bellowed. Her eyes twinkled in amusement.
"Okay okay... calm down!" She laughed. Her laugh carried itself through the air, it was infectious. I began to laugh too. That's when I really began to realise that this was the first time in about a year and a half that we had talked openly to each other.
All of a sudden my mum stopped laughing and her eyes became serious. Her reaction caused me to lean back and send her questioning eyes.
"If her wolf is alive..." She gasped cutting herself off. The curiosity flamed inside me and so did my annoyance.
"What?!?" I yelled.
"We only have a limited amount of time before the spell wears off." She cried. She clutched her chest looking at me with panicked eyes.
"WHAT?!" How....? If the spell wears off then she would have done all this for what? A weak body? To loose her other half? Just to 'try?' Don't take it the wrong way, I am extremely grateful but I can't lose her as well.
"She only said that there was twenty-four hours until the spell wears off. It's been five already!! We only have nineteen left." She cried. Tears of worry fell from my eyes as the realisation dawned on her, this is the only chance to save Tegan.
"You must reunite Tegan with her wolf before it's too late. It's our only hope. I've done my part, now you must complete yours."
