How the heck did I get caught up into this? I thought to myself, typing on my keyboard rapidly and trying to finish as fast as possible. I impatiently moved the mouse around and my knee bounced up and down, a habit I had yet to break. Josh said it was his "cheat sheet" as he called it, to tell if I was lying or nervous. Then again, I could never hide anything from him. We'd been friends since we were 6 years old and hung out enough to read each other without second thoughts. My computer chimed a quiet alert and I glanced at it. Finished, it read. Would you like to quit this program? Sure as heck I did. I clicked "okay" and silently closed my laptop. I got up from the table I was sitting at and proceeded to tiptoe from the room, hoping no one saw me.
"Ms. Jamison. Where do you think you're going?" No such luck. I cursed silently and slowly turned on the balls of my feet.
"Nowhere Mr. Lee." I forced a smile on my face. "Just using the restroom. It is for certain emergencies, sir." That did nothing to alter his demeanor.
"Well Miss, just make sure you go right back to class. You shouldn't be out during the class period." His clipped tone never faultered.
"Yes sir."
I quickly strode past him to the restroom and yanked open the door. As I was leaving, I took a drink at the fountain and quite suddenly felt two strong hands grab my waist and pull me back. I shrieked and fought against my mystery assaulter, using my strong arm muscles to try and get him off me, as he wrapped his arms into a bear hug hold.
"Hey quit it!" A male voice laughed and I sighed.
"Josh! What the heck were you thinking?!" I gave him a stern look, but my lips slowly turned up. I couldn't stay mad at him for long. Our longest fight didn't even last more than two days. I had been mad at him for not showing up for our regular Friday night hang out. We always hung out, order pizza and stuff ourselves with popcorn and ice cream. He came to my door Saturday evening with a box popcorn, Ben & Jerry's ice cream and 27 Dresses, my favorite movie. He knew my weaknesses and I knew his.
He brushed his dirty blonde hair to the side, giving him the "side swept" look, and smiled at me.
"I was thinking that I should totally scare you at the drinking fountain." He smirked, which would have made every girl in our school swoon and bat her eyelashes but I've known him since, well forever really. He's like my brother.
"Man, you're a pain in the butt, you know that?! I finished that download you wanted, and almost got caught in the process. You should be glad I didn't get my laptop taken away." I shuddered at the thought. I would be in so much trouble if Mr. Lee had seen it, and don't even get me started on my parents. They would kill me. Quite literally, I might add. He smirked again.
"Of course I'm happy. That was really great of you." The smirk turned to a real smile. "You're a really great friend."
"That's just cause you hire me to do your dirty work and I do it." I smirk at him.
He ruffled my hair and I went on my way to Physics. He had Calculus, so I was on my own to walk.
After seventh period ended, I walked to my locker and put my books away. Slipping my backpack back on and settling it on my shoulders, I began the long walk from the school doors down to the parking lot. Now that we were seniors, we were closest to the doors. No more climbing up or down stairs to get to the door. Right as I passed by a bench, I felt a light tap on my left shoulder. Knowing his trick, I looked to the right, and caught him.
"Aw, dang it!" He exclaimed and pumped his fist down in defeat, faking disappointment. "I always use to get you for that!"
"Haha, yeah right! I always beat you! You scream like a diva girl when you turn back around and see me! It's so amusing!" I smirked, laughing as he hit me on the shoulder. He knew I was kidding just like I knew he was. But this is just what our relationship consisted of. Friendly kidding around and fake bickering.
We walked down to my navy blue truck and drove to my house. Taking the three steps up to my house in one jump, I unlocked the door and we dumped our bags in the dining room. Running down to the basement, Josh flopped down face first on the couch. Before he could move, I sat on his legs. He grunted and tried shoving me off. He didn't succeed, as I was a big softball player and was pretty bulky as well. He then proceeded to grab me and pull me down on top of him and rolled over. I fought back, screeching at him to let me go. He didn't, obviously. Darn these football muscles, he spent every day in the gym for the entire summer and it showed. He added about 2x the amount of bulk and could now out arm wreastle me. I use to take pride in showing off my skills, but now it was just humiliating.
I finally got him off me when I kneed up and hit him in the family jewels. Bellowing, he rolled off me and curled in a ball.
"WHAT THE HECK WAS THAT FOR?!"
"I had to get you off somehow. Don't be such a sissy." I smirked at him cowering like that.
"I'm not being a sissy. That freaking hurt!! You're just lucky you don't have to deal with it. That's why you take advantage of me being a guy!"
"Cut the emotional crap will ya? It's too late in the day. And besides, you don't have to deal with the pain we go through each and every month."
"I know, and I'm so relieved we don't."
I ht him again and this time on the shoulder. He winced dramatically and looked at me with amusement in his stormy blue eyes. I flopped on top of him and he grunted before bear hugging me. I kicked him hard in the shins and he let go. I rolled to the right and laid on my stomach on the floor with my eyes closed. Not even a minute later, I feel him sit on top of me and I exhaled, then struggled to breathe.
"Get your fat butt off of me!"
"Admit it. You don't think I'm fat. I just have a load of sexy." His smirk intensified. Finally I found a way out.
"Would you want me to kick you in the balls again?"
"Ha! You can barely get up let alone kick me."
"That's what you think..." I threatened with an evil glare. Unfortunately it didn't have the wanted effect. Instead of getting off me, he proceeded to lay on top of me. Unfortunately for him, I wouldn't give in without a fight. I kicked and punched and ended up back handing him in the nose.
He moaned and rolled off me and onto his back, then sat up, clutching his nose and shooting daggers at me with his eyes.
"It never gets old," I reply to his hurt expression.
"Sure for you it doesn't. You're not the one in pain."
"Suck up and act like the man you were biologically made as."
He rolled his eyes and sat up onto the couch. I got up and sat next to him. He took out his phone and sent a message.
"Who was that? Another fling?"
He quickly put it away, hiding the screen from me.
"No. Just one of my baseball buddies."
"Which one? Zach? or Alex?"
"Does it matter?" He snapped. My eyes widened a bit.
"No..I guess it doesn't. Don't get all bunched up about it. Sorry for asking."
He glanced at me.
"I'm sorry. I'm just so stressed right now." He looked down at the floor. "So how about that movie?"
"As long as you make your delicious chocolate covered popcorn." I smiled.
He smiled back. "Of course, but just because you burn yours." He was back to his usual self, thank god.
"I do not!"
"Denial just means you're hiding something."
"Fine...." I mutter. He laughed aloud and went to make the popcorn. When he came back, I had The Dark Knight Rises in and playing. He plopped down beside me and placed the bowl between us. I grabbed the bowl and, with both hands, dug in. He proceeded to shove me, calling me a pig. I shove him back and that made the popcorn spill everywhere on the couch. He attacked the couch. Something's never change. But something's do.
