Mike frowned at the screen of his phone when he realized Ruky was not picking the call. He called her the second time and the outcome was same. He opened WhatsApp and started to type a message, but changed his mind and sent an SMS instead. He waited for a reply but got nothing after a minute. He called again, and this time he found himself feeling worried for no reason. When the automated voice mail requested that he leave a voice message, he ended the call and chucked the phone onto his bed. Don’t let your head get into this, Mike, he thought. She’s still an unbeliever.

Ruky did not know what to say, but she was just not ready to drag Mike into any clashes with Dee, knowing the kind of man he was. Dee showed her the screen and raised his eyebrows. “Why is he eager to reach you? You haven’t answered my question. Who is Mike?”
Ruky bit her lip and shook her head. Dee narrowed his eyes and in a quick move, he thrust the dagger into the sofa, causing Ruky to scream and sob. “I’ll tell you!” she cried.
“Shhhh…keep your voice down,” Dee said in a threatening tone and glared at her. “Who is Mike?”
“He’s – um – he’s nobody.”
Dee leaned back and stared in silence. Ruky blinked.
“I see. I guess I will have to kill – “
“I work with him. He’s a delivery guy for our catering service. I asked him to call me and give me a report on something and – and he delayed. I am sure that was an apology I missed.”
Dee smirked. “I’m the wrong person to play with.”
“Dee, no! It’s nothing. Don’t do this.”
Dee was getting angry. Ruky felt his body swelling right before her, and she panicked. He clenched his jaw and seized her throat. Ruky choked and tried reaching for the mirror lying at the end of the sofa, but Dee knocked it onto the ground out of her reach. “I will punish you in a way uncomfortable to your gender.”
Ruky gasped and started to plead, but the words came out in squeaks. Tears started to pour down her face and she shivered as sobs burst out of her mouth. She knew from experience the implications of what Dee said, and the horrid memories it brought back to her made her wish she would just disappear. Dee seized her hair, dragged her with him into her bedroom, and threw her into the bed. He went back into the hall and locked the door. Ruky heard the sound of music from the stereo, and slowly, the volume went up. Dee returned and bolted the door behind him. Ruky started to scream at the top of her voice, but the music drowned it. He pounced on her and punched her in the left eye. Ruky tried shielding her face from any further punches, but Dee seized her arms and pinned them to the bed, simply rendering her defenceless. Dee quickly pulled out his belt and seized Ruky’s jeans.
“Dee, please….I beg you…”
“You leave me for a delivery boy, eh?” Dee growled and in one strong yank, he pulled her jeans down. “I will teach you a lesson you will never forget.”
“Dee – NO! I don’t have anything to do with him! Please! Dee! No!”
Asieduwaa stared at Ruky’s house and listened. The music playing from the hall was very loud, and she wondered why, since it was unusual of her neighbour to play music in the morning. She walked to the door and attempted to knock but hesitated. She slowly walked closer to the bedroom window and heard sobs, moans and grunts.
“Dee – you’re hurting me! STOP!” she heard Ruky cry. Asieduwaa raised her eyebrows and cocked her head to listen carefully. As soon as she heard the rhythmic creaking of the bed, she snorted and shook her head.
“Who was she trying to fool?” she asked herself and giggled. “You think you can smuggle your boyfriend here and call him your uncle and a fraud? Ei! When she’s done, she will have to answer some questions.” She clapped her hands and walked away with no idea what torture her neighbour was enduring in the bedroom.
