They waited for the lights to turn back on but they didn't. "Why haven't the lights come back on?" Valkyrie asked, aiming her question at Skulduggery. When he didn't answer her, she froze inside. "Skulduggery?" she asked and her heart raced when she got no answer. "Dexter? Tanith? Ghastly? Ellion?"

She stumbled around in the dark until she found a wall and she traced it to a door and brushed all around it until she finally found a light switch. She flicked it on and a mossy green, dull light illuminated the living room of Anathem Mire's house. His dead body lay crumpled just shy of her boots and she tumbled back and whirled as she hit something hard and the room changed around her to the chamber in the pyramid of the Brides of Blood Tears and she was being surrounded by the murderous bellydancers. Then she blinked and she was falling until she landed on her back in Nye's operating room and her heart lay on the table, the Crenga itself looming over her.

She screamed and the metal rattled until she rolled off the table and found herself in cold water and the sea hag was twirling around her. She kicked to the surface and when she broke it and took a gulp of air she was dry and on her hands and knees in a cave watching Tanith Low black veined running up into the gloom and the accelerator sucked her in and she was trapped in her own head watching Darquesse tear people apart. She kicked down the jail door and tried to breathe and calm herself as she was hanging onto a bridge over a lava pit and Gant's house and sweat rolled down her brows. She let go and fell and landed tumbling down the snow on Mount Everest and a yeti appeared and clamped its jaws over her head.

Her eyes adjusted to the darkness of its vile mouth and the yeti around her disappeared and she was sprinting down the stairs and the grotesquery materialized in front of her. She twisted away and fell into grass. Valkyrie looked over her shoulder to see the Faceless One chasing after her and she was on her feet looking into the light with desperation, reaching her arm out as Skulduggery was pulled into the portal to the Faceless Ones world and it closed and she fell to her knees again in front of Kenspeckle Grouse's dead body and she stared into the light crying until it consumed her world and faded away to reveal she was in her house with Stephanie pointing the sceptre at her and the glass shattered as Caelan bounded in snarling and attacked her.

She pushed him off the pier and he drowned in the saltwater, killing him. She looked up and she was on a grassy hill and Melancholia was in front of her with the shadows slashing at her wildly, she was thrown to the ground and the rocks in the caves of the void were pushing in on her, claustrophobia kicking in and the chittering monsters around her were clicking. Valkyrie fell through a trap door in the rocks and she was standing in front of Mevolant, his hand inches from her face.

There was a hand on her shoulder and she was teleported to Gordon's house where she was taking the stairs two at a time and a frightening man with charred flesh was chasing her for a key. She went into her bedroom, the world spinning and when she came out she was in a corridor begging for it to stop and she ran until she hit something solid. She looked up, shaking in fear and grief and wanting to collapse, sobbing within every inch of herself so that the face was blurry from tears when she saw it

"Valkyrie?" Dexter Vex asked. She buried her face in his chest and heard his heart racing as fast as hers. He was shaking as well. Whatever this strange world was, he'd been through it too. All his memories of the worst kind. But even though he was as weakened as she was he held her in a comforting way. He needed to hold her as much as she needed to be held.

"You went through it too, didn't you?" Valkyrie asked and tried to catch her breath but she was wailing as she wept and felt his tear drop onto her head as well.

"Yeah." Was all he said in reply. Then Tanith came tumbling from the study room and she was screaming and sweating and Ellion came from the room next to her gasping for breath and crying. She hugged him and checked all over him to see if he was okay before hugging him close and they sobbed together. Ghastly stumbled from another room with fear in his eyes and sweat dripping off him. Tanith moved to hug him as well. Everyone stuck close together and waited for Skulduggery, Fletcher, Saracen, Vivi, Andena, and Anton to come out but they didn't.

"W-where ar—are w-we?" Valkyrie asked once she'd calmed down enough.

"It looks like G-Gordons house. But something t-twisted." Tanith replied.

"It's not Gordon's house. It's more of a twisted version. You don't think we're in Anathem Mire's caves, do you?" Valkyrie asked.

"I don't know, but maybe we should check the house for the others," Dexter suggested. "Split up?"

"No way." Ellion shook his head. "Last time we did that it ended terribly."

"True that." Tanith agreed.

"I say we search the house in a group and then see where we are. But I think if the rest of the Dead Men and our other friends were in this house we'd know about it already." Ghastly commented.

"Ghastly's right, if they're not here now, they won't be in this house." Dexter agreed.

"So, we check outside then?" Tanith asked and Valkyrie was already halfway down the stairs when she was hit with a sudden chill.

"Valkyrie!" Dexter called out to her. "Don't move."

"Why?" she asked, her mouth suddenly dry and rough as sandpaper.

"Don't freak out but right in front of you, look down." He instructed.

"What's wrong with the stairs?" she questioned.

"Look at the dust. Can you see the footprints?" Ghastly chirped in.

Now she saw them. "What does that mean? There's someone else in the house with us?"

"It means there's someone else in front of you." Tanith realized.

"A ghost?" Valkyrie whispered, eyes wide in realization.

"No, ghosts are a lot less dangerous than this. These touch you and you wither away and die." Dexter shook his head.

"What are they?"

"Spectres." Ghastly uttered. "Ghosts who refuse to believe they are dead."

At his words the spectre showed itself, inches from Valkyrie's face was a pale young girl with dark curls and grey eyes but through the transparent looking head the severed neck and dried up organs inside were visible and the rest of her body looked more solid and real. Valkyrie choked on her scream and the girl lifted a finger and it hovered over Valkyrie's cheek.

"You have a pretty head." The girl said in hushed tones. "Can I have it?"

"I would say yes if I weren't so attached to it." She choked out and the girl's face morphed into something vicious with completely dilated pupils like shark's eyes and a wide gaping mouth with razor-sharp teeth as she screamed and dove to tear Valkyrie's throat out. Dexter grabbed Valkyrie's arm and pulled her up the stairs. They ran.
