It was a quiet night in Aspertia City.  Two kids were sitting on a bench on the lookout at the northernmost point of the city, staring up at the stars.

"So you're serious, Maya?  You're finally getting yourself a Pokemon tomorrow?" one of the kids asked his friend.

"That's what my mom said.  She got a call today from a friend, and now someone is coming over here tomorrow to give me a Pokemon.  I told you this earlier, Hugh." Maya replied with a smile.  Hugh smiled a bit and leaned back on the bench he was sitting on.

"Good, I was hoping this would happen one day." Hugh said while Maya looked at him with a confused expression on her face.

"What do you mean?" Maya questioned while Hugh stood up, looking up at the sky with a serious expression on his face.

"There's something important I need to do, and I need someone I can trust by my side.  You know about my sister, right?  Well, her-" Hugh began to explain until his Xtransciever began to ring.  Clearly, Hugh was a bit annoyed that he was interrupted while he was trying to say something important to his friend, but he turned to face her anyway.

"Sorry, Maya.  I need to take this.  I'll be right back." Hugh said before he walked away to go answer the call, leaving Maya by herself.

'Someone he can trust, huh?  I've never seen Hugh being so serious about something other than training his Pokemon.  Whatever he wanted to say must be important.' Maya thought while she stood up and walked towards the stairs Hugh went down.  She let out a quiet sigh as her thoughts went to what Pokemon she was going to get tomorrow.  While she was happy, deep down, she was a bit worried that she may not be a good enough trainer.

"If you're so worried about your potential, you're better off just giving up." an unfamiliar voice pointed out as if they had read Maya's thoughts.  When Maya heard the strange voice, she turned around to find a young girl standing on the bench she was sitting on before.

"Who are you?  How did you even get over here?" Maya questioned while the strange girl stepped off the bench and began walking towards Maya.  As she walked, she opened up her hand, causing a large blue sphere to come out of the palm of her hand.

"You wish to help your friend, but you worry about your own skills.  If you want, I can help you." the strange girl continued, completely ignoring Maya's question as she continued moving forward while Maya stepped back towards the stairs.  Meanwhile, at the bottom of the stairs, Hugh was in the middle of talking with his parents on his Xtransciever.  Shortly before he planned to tell his parents the news about Maya getting a Pokemon, a flash of blue light came from further up the stairs.

"What was that flash of light?" Hugh's dad asked while Hugh stood up and looked towards the top of the stairs, wondering what could've caused the light.

'What is Maya doing up there?' Hugh wondered as he turned around and began walking up the stairs.  Once he reached the top of the stairs, he found Maya sitting by herself on one of the benches.  Unlike when he left her, Maya was looking down at the ground and she looked unusually pale.

"Mom, dad, I need to go.  Something's wrong with Maya.  I'll take care of things at home while you're gone.  Yeah, see you tomorrow." Hugh said to his parents, ending the call on his Xtransciever and making his way over to Maya, who didn't seem to notice Hugh was there.

"Maya, are you feeling alright?" Hugh questioned while he put a hand on her shoulder.  Her entire body was cold to the touch, as if he was touching a statue instead of his friend.  While he had thought that Maya was just joking and planning to scare him or something, he began to get worried when he felt the unusually cold chill coming from his friend.

"Come on, Maya.  If this is some kind of joke, it's not funny anymore.  Maya, please.  Just answer me!" Hugh said as he put his hands on Maya's shoulders and shook her in an attempt to get a response out of her.  Meanwhile, down at the bottom of the stairs, the mysterious young girl who had met with Maya earlier stood and laughed at Hugh's futile attempts to get Maya to respond.

"That foolish boy should just be glad it was her and not him.  You game characters are so easy to break.  One tiny change to your matrix and you turn into motionless dolls." the girl said to herself.  She looked up at the sky and smiled.

"Tomorrow, it shall begin.  Every piece of my plans is now in place.  Now all I must do is guide the fool from the outside world to his soul's destruction." the girl continued while she began to walk away from the stairs, laughing the entire time.
