Time For a Brave Face

It took almost a full week for me to decide. But I know what I have to do now, even if it means giving up my normal life and putting on a brave face.
I pulled on a blue T-shirt, a pair of dark jeans, my old tennis shoes and a light black sweatshirt for over top.
Wow, I thought to myself. I never thought I'd see the day where me of all people venture out alone to be a hero. Alone. That's never really hit me until now. This is all up to me. I'll be all alone.
I tried to wipe that thought from my mind and replace it with thoughts of encouragement.
I looked in the mirror and smoothed back my hair. You can do this Jacob your going to be a hero, I thought.
I took one last look at my room before grabbing my backpack and heading out my bedroom door.
"I made you breakfast and packed you some snacks for your journey" I heard my grandma say from the kitchen.
"Thanks grandma."
"I'm really going to miss having you around every day Jacob."
"I know, me too. Can we go over the plan one more time"
"Sure, so your going to go down to headquarters and sneak on to the truck that they will be taking to the surface. The rest is then up to you to find out their plan and how to stop it."
"Okay" I said hesitantly.
"

You'll be fine" She said reaching over for a hug.
I hugged her back wishing that I didn't have to leave. But it was time so I grabbed my backpack along with the bag of snacks and headed for the front door. I turned around before letting the door close.
"I won't let you down Grandma... I promise."
And with that the door closed, but I knew that a new one was opening to my future.
