After the tense afternoon
building, so long – agony –
the storm front is massing, we knew it would come
- had to, at last
flickers, you see, of lightning, far away through the haze over the hills
far away, silent
summer storms,
the clouds sweep overhead
it is all at once – sudden!
there is a crack, the heavens open,
rain pelts as though a bucket has been
overturned
those in the street scurry for shelter
but the anticipation, the impatient waiting,
it is over! the final release
sighs of content
as the rain pours outside
the storm is broken, you cry!
and it was as if something broke, as if
the sky broke open
