Time for Fun

Tony Sunday dawned bright and WAY early for us at the Miranda household. I was expecting to be awoken by my alarm but instead it was Lin. He looked at me and sighed "Come to my office when you are dressed. Something happened last night and I think we need to talk. I don't want you blindsided at the awards tonight."

I nodded and quickly got out of bed. My mind was whirling with so many different possibilities. I was worried something had happened to Skye or someone else in the cast. I grabbed my #bitofaday shirt and comfortable capri's with my good walking shoes. I knew I would change later in the day so I didn't want to do my hair and makeup yet.

"Sit down" he said as he shut the door behind us. I looked at him questioningly and sat down. "Something happened very early this morning around 2 am and I want you to be aware of it. Vanessa knows and I'm sure many of the cast knows by now. I don't want you to find out from anyone before I can explain." *

I nodded "Papi you are scaring me, what is going on? What happened this morning that has you so worked up?"

He sighed "This morning at 2 am a lone gunmen attacked a nightclub in Orlando, Florida. There are still working on getting a number of how many died but at least count it was in the 30's. Many more were hurt in this senseless attack as well. They say it was an attack because of gays and lesbians at the club. That is why I brought you in on this, I wanted to tell you first. People may ask for your reaction tonight at the Tony's since you are openly a lesbian. Both you and Skye are going to be asked. What you say is up to you but you are not required to say anything."

I sighed taking a deep breath and felt Lin's arms go around me in a hug. I leaned in as I began to cry and we sat there for what seemed like forever before I finally could speak. "I am not sure what I want to say or if I'll say anything. I knew hate crimes were still something that happened, I just never imagined them happening this close to home. I don't know what to think Papi."

He smiled rubbing my back "We have to get going soon. How about we table this for when we are done with rehearsals okay? Then we can talk some more and by then I am sure you will have talked to Skye. Is she coming to rehearsals?"

I nodded "Yeah Chris still doesn't feel right leaving her home alone for very long. Plus we are going to get changed together and walk the red carpet together. I think you will love my dress. By the way, love the shirt I chose for today?"

He nodded laughing "Yes, it fits today perfectly."

I sat with Skye as we rode in vans from the Rogers to the Tony theater. We talked quietly about what had happened earlier that day. I sighed "How do we even put into words what we are feeling? I can't even put a finger on how I am feeling."

She sighed nodding "Me either. It's like we are in a dream world right now is the best way to describe what I'm feeling."

"How are you feeling..you know otherwise?" I asked taking her hand and playing with her fingers.

"Okay I guess, I'm still very sore and tender. I finally was able to take a bath last night so that helped. I still haven't gotten a visit from Aunt Flo so I am terrified about what that could mean" she shrugged.

"We are taking this one day at a time remember" I said giving her a kiss on the cheek. I heard Jasmine chuckle from behind us.

"You two are so cute together. Maybe we should plan a double wedding someday'' she grinned.

"Only if you wait say 6+ years before you marry Anthony" I teased. "I doubt he would wish to wait that long."

We continued to talk about fun things as we arrived at the theater to rehearse. Skye went to sit in the audience in the seat she would occupy later that night. We all went to stretch and get ready to run through our number on the big stage.

We were about to take the stage for our run through when a page tapped me on the shoulder. She whispered something in my ear and I ran to find Papi. "Hey I gotta go. Skye is in the bathroom sick and I need to check on her. Tell Andy I'll be back asap."

He nodded as I took off for the women's room that the page had sent me to. I found Skye hunched over the sink splashing water on her face. I hugged her from behind "What happened?"

"The theater was empty and I was all alone or so I thought. I heard someone singing in the back and turned around to find a guy standing back there. He saw me looking at him and he walked toward me. I started hyperventalating and felt very sick. I raced from the theater and came in here. I'm sorry to pull you from rehearsals."

I shook my head "You were right to send the page to find me. I needed to be here for you. Do you want to come sit off stage while we practice, that way you won't be alone? I don't want to leave you alone again."

She sighed "Would that be okay with Lin? I don't want to make him mad."

I shook my head "If he has a problem with it, I'll deal with that later. Right now you are my main priority."

She smiled "Our roles have reveresed, did you notice that? I was your protector for so long and now you are mine."

"That's the best kind of relationships" I smiled kissing her cheek. "We lift each other up and take care of one another. I learned that from Mami and Papi, they are my inspiration."

I rejoined the cast on the stage for another run through and several asked me how Skye was. I pointed to her offstage and they all waved. We made it through 3 more rehearsals before Alex called time. We had exactly 3 hours before we were to walk the red carpet. The ladies had taken over two huge dressing rooms upstairs so Skye and I ran upstairs. I found Mami, Abuela, and Luz waiting for us in the room where Jaz, Renee, and Pippa were getting ready.

I sighed "I really hope Papi loves my dress. I mean it is my first real even to wear something this formal too. Should I wear my hair up or down? I mean for Yorktown it will have to be up."

"Down" the whole room chorused and I laughed. They all loved it when my hair was down, I had the hair that everyone wanted. Somedays I wanted to cut it all off but not today.

Katie arrived a little bit after we had begun to get ready. She chuckled "It is a zoo out there! I swear had I not had my credentials I would've been cuffed and taken away by the police. Is my dress here?"

Mami nodded "Yep right over there. Here put on this smock so we can get your makeup done first. We are doing light makeup for you girls."

Katie nodded and sat down beside me. She sighed "How are you doing? I take it you heard about this morning?"

I nodded "Yeah it's all most people are talking about. Skye and I have decided to just address questions if they come up, not to offer anything up."

She nodded "That's the best way to handle it. Has your dad still not seen the dress?"

I shook my head "I am surprised he has held out this long. Tonight is going to be fun seeing his reaction. I know several are taping it to put up on twitter."

Soon enough we were getting into our dresses. I felt like a princess stepping into my gown and did a twirl. Everyone had chosen beautiful outfits for this night and I felt like this was a good sign of things to come.

"Come on your dad is this way" Vanessa said taking my hand and leading me down a long hallway. Everyone else was headed downstairs but I wanted to surprise Papi first.

*For this story I took a little liberty and said Lin had heard about this before rehearsals when in fact he didn't know until after.

Also I wanted to end this here. I wanted Lin's reaction to be what started the biggest night of his and Hamilton's life :)
