As we walked to the furthest art room from the stairs, we (Zakob and I) apologised to Robbie. We told him it wasn't his fault he was born short and that we're sorry for mocking him, he got pissed with the first part but then saw our faces. He sighed and accepted our apology. Zakob and I grinned at each other and started ruffling his hair, teasing him about his height again. I can tell he got annoyed but started laughing. He knows, we all know that we no longer act like this as much as we used to, so we took this chance and acted like how we used to each other, Back then when we had now worries.
Once we entered the room and closed it behind me, Dien stopped packing his art supplies midway and hugged each of us. Me being the last, Zakob and Robbie already made theirselves comfortable at a table in the middle of the room.
Dien was still busy stuffing stuff in his bag that he didn't notice that Zakob already had his sketchbook in his hands. Flicking through the pages like how someone scans through newspaper.
I haven't seen Dien's artwork in a while so I joined Zakob. Robbie reaching the scene before I did, he sat beside Zakob so I had to stand up behind them. He looked at me with a smile and mouthed one word: revenge
I knew this wasn't the only thing he'll annoy me with.
Each sketch showed different scenes. Some bursted with colours through the page while others showed different tones of darkness on the page making it 3D.
They all showed different times and seasons. His art was basically amazing. All full of emotions, all different. He's going to be a great artist one day.I jerked my neck upwards to face Dien and compliment his work but was stopped by Robbie tapping my shoulder furiously.
"Wh-what?"
I stood frozen at Robbie with a shocked expression on his face but worry filled his eyes. Zakob waved his hand over my face to get my attention and proceeded to point at a peculiar painting. A painting on the very last page of the sketchbook owned by Dien Obrigues and my mouth formed into an 'O'.
"You drew a person?" Robbie looked calm, but his voice was shaking, eyes intimidating.
Dien stopped fiddling and washing the paint brushes at the sink and looked at us, confused.
"What person?" He raised an eyebrow while drying his wet hands with the towel tissues next to him. He started to approach us, but Zakob stood up making the unbearable squeaky sound happen when metal chair legs meet wood. We covered our ears and squinted our eyes to the sound, but Zakob, unfazed, walked over and shoved the black sketchbook on his face.
This doesn't look good
Dien stared blankly at the page for a few minutes. We now and then called his name, making sure he's here and is thinking about the answer. We stood, eagerly looking forward to his reasons. I glanced over at Robbie, who was sweating buckets that he had to wipe his forehead every few seconds. His knees were shaking, as if about to fall if it wasn't for his eyes. Eyes terrified, Eyes eager, Eyes angry. I see it. The emotions swelling up inside him.
Zakob on the other hand looked calm. He had on a calm expression, his arms were crossed with his heel tapping on the brown floor every second. Making the 2 minutes longer than what it actually was.
We were so distracted by Dien that we didn't notice the bell ring, ringing again a couple of seconds later to signal that anyone turning up now will be considered late. We didn't notice at all. All we looked at, all we heard, all we felt were his sweaty hands, the smell of deodorant and the long sighs he made.
He opened his mouth to speak when the door suddenly banged open, making us jump in surprise. I giggled a bit at the girly scream Robbie made and the loud sigh that escaped his lips when he saw who stood: with a chin up high, shoulders relaxed and legs a little parted from the sides.
(A/N: I tried to present a thick Scottish accent. I'm sorry if I offended anybody just correct it in the comments)
"YOU GUYS STILL 'ERE? YOU DA REEALISE THAT THE BELL FOR LATE HAS GONE, NAW?"Annie came boldly at Zakob and Robbie. They both started to back away, uneasiness appearing on Rob's face. She yanked both of their arms around hers, squeezing tightly to the extent of making Zakob clench his jaw to the unbearable pain as I hold my stomach, laughing.
Once they left the room, pleading for help, I stared around the room. The cream coloured walls covered with bright paintings, different shapes of unfinished sculptures on a table in the corner, sketches littered in the tiniest of spaces, little card posters promoting art competitions, opened cupboards full of materials and the big board in front of the room. You can tell it was an art room at first glance.
I continued to peer around the room until my eyes landed on Dien who stood still horrified at the picture. The sketchbook laid on the floor still open. I slowly picked it up as the sun's light shone on the name 'Dien Obriguez' written at the bottom of the portrait. I handed it to him, with the most happy smile I could think of, careful to not show my worries on my face.
As we left the classroom, Dien smiling and laughing with me, is still quite couldn't get the thought out of my head. Why did Dien draw a person, and out of all people why did he draw the exact same smile of the certain person in a gap purple jacket from this morning?
