Chapter Five: Camp Half-Blood

Marissa’s POV

After three hours of driving, we finally arrived to the “Camp.” At first all I saw was trees and a big white country house with strawberry fields in the distance. My mom gets out of the car practically bursting with excitement. “Come on you two!” she says impatiently. We start walking up to the house and I can see a sign that says “Camp Half-Blood.” At some point I could see numerous other cabins and lots of teenagers. The teenagers were all doing different activities like rock climbing, arts and crafts, volleyball, basketball, and sword fighting. This was not a regular camp. I followed my mom and Leo to the big house where a man in a wheelchair was waiting. People were staring at us with gaping looks. “Annabeth, Leo it’s been too long!” the man says. My mom looks like she is about to cry and she practically runs to the man.

“Chiron, I’ve missed you so much!” She hugs the man and he chuckles. I stand beside Leo feeling very awkward until my mom says, “Marissa come here please.” I walk over to my mom and the man, Chiron. He smiles kindly at me and says,

“The last time I saw you you were barely walking!” I have no recollection of this man whatsoever, but he seems to know me. My mom introduces us and Chiron is about to say something when a mob of adults come running up.

“Annabeth! Leo! Where is Percy and the rest of the seven?” So it turns out everyone knows my parents and Leo. The group gathers around Leo and mom and don’t seem to take notice in me until my mom drags me over and announces,

“Everyone, I’d like you too meet my daughter Marissa.” They fall so silent that you could hear a pin drop. I hear someone whisper,

“Oh my gods its really her.” My mom looks agitated. “Holy Hades!” I hear another person whisper/yell. “Move aside demis Mr. and Mrs. Grace coming through!” I hear a vaguely familiar voice say.

“You will never get tired of saying that will you?” I hear a female voice ask teasingly.

“Nope,” The familiar voice says again. I finally see the people who were talking. The man is tall with blonde hair and electric blue eyes. He has a very commanding presence and a small scar below his lip. His arm is draped around a very beautiful woman. She is slightly indian looking and her eyes dance and change colors. Her hair is braided and thrown over her shoulder with a few feathers.

“Wassup buddy?” Leo says almost immediately pulling the man into a bro hug. The woman runs over to my mom and they embrace like sisters. After their hug, the beautiful woman runs over and practically jumps on uncle Leo.

“I see you’ve missed me Beauty Queen!” He says in shock before hugging her back.

“Jason! Piper! I’ve missed you two! How’s Sean and Hadley” My mom exclaims hugging the blonde man. I wrinkle my nose in concentration, because Sean is a very familiar name to me. Piper and Jason are so familiar too, like an aunt or uncle you haven’t seen in forever but you barely remember them. They start talking about kids and how toddlers can be. I poke at a pebble with my sandal. “This is my daughter, Marissa. Marissa say hi.” My mom commands dragging me by the shoulders over to the familiar strangers.

“Hi,” I say. Piper looks like she about to cry and won’t stop smiling at me. Jason shakes my hand and declares,

“Well, I haven’t seen you for what, ten years now?” How do all these people know me? I can only force a smile. Piper then engulfs me a hug and whispers into my ear,

“You look like your parents.” She eventually pulls away and my mom declares,

“Okay so Marissa has no clue what is going on so I am going to take her to the Poseidon cabin and get her situated until Percy, Hazel, and Frank get here.” I vigorously nod because I really want to get out of the crowd. My mom says goodbye to the now dispersing crowd and grabs me by the arm. “Come on, I’ll show you where your dad lived for most of his life.

Lexi’s POV

Sean walked me to my house, which wasn’t too far away from Rissa’s. It would have been very romantic, but sadly we were just attacked by a monster. He stood awkwardly at the base of my porch while I unlocked the door and slipped in. Before I closed the door I shouted at him, “Thanks for everything!” He grinned a charming smile and yells back,

“I will be here at noon to pick you up.” I wave my hand and close the door. My dad is on the couch watching TV. I walk in and get straight to business.

“Dad, who is my mom and I want an honest answer.” My dad looks confused and tells me,

“Well hello to you too! Why the sudden interest in your mom?”

“Well lets just sum it up by saying I was attacked by a monster tonight and the boy who saved me is coming at noon tomorrow to bring me to some camp.” My dad goes stone white and asks worriedly,

“Are you hurt?” I shake my head no and repeat my question. He runs his hand through his fading blonde hair and says, “Honey, you know those greek myths you learned about in school a few years back?” I nod. “Those myths, monsters, and gods are all real. They have been moving with the heart of Western civilization since Greece fell.” I am shocked and confused. If there are gods and monsters than how come no ones knows? My dad must have read my mind cause he adds, “They use a mythical substance called Mist to shield them away from mortal eyes.”

“How does this affect me again?” I ask shakily. He looks me dead in the eyes and says,

“Lexi your mother is a the greek goddess Iris.”

Marissa’s POV

My mom walked me to a cabin with rough gray stone walls. Little pieces of seashell and coral are imprinted into the walls and it is facing the sea. My mom walks me in and says, “You don’t have to sleep here if you want. Me and your father are sleeping in the big house and you are welcome to do so too. I just thought that maybe you would want to sleep here.” I cut her off by saying,

“I love it here! I can sleep here it is fine, but when is dinner?” My mom smiles and her gray eyes that match mine dance. “Dinner should be in an hour or so, but your dad and I want to talk to you before then. I will leave you to settle in, I am going to visit some of my old friends. I will send your father down to get you when he gets here.” I nod and wave her off. The cabin was amazing. Bunk beds line the walls and a huge window is out looking the ocean. I take the bed closest to the window and sit facing up. A colorful mobile of some mythical fish horses hang on the ceiling. I breathe in a deep breath and smell the comforting salty tang of ocean. I felt at home here in this foreign beachside cabin.  I close my eyes and slowly drift off to sleep, listening to the crash of the ocean.
