Louis, Liam, and Niall were enjoying a picnic and a game of basketball on Saturday at a local park. They were all the best of friends, and Louis enjoyed hanging out with them, especially when he couldn't be with his boyfriend, Harry, who had to work a shift at the hospital.

They decided to take a quick break from the game to eat a few cookies.

"So, Lou," Niall said, taking a bite out of an Oreo. "When does Harry get off work?"

"Seven o'clock. Why?" Louis answered, reaching for another cookie.

"Just wondering. Thought maybe we could watch a movie together since he's not here right now."

"Yeah, I'm sure he'd like that," Louis said. A bee suddenly flew over their picnic table, flying around the food. "Get out of here!" Louis swatted at the bee and then he felt a piercing, sharp pain on the back of his hand. "Ouch!"

"What happened?" Liam asked.

"I think the bee just stung me." Louis glanced carefully at his hand. There was a red spot and something embedded in it. The stinger. "Gross, the stinger's still stuck in my hand."

"Let me see, mate," Niall said. Louis showed it to him and Niall made a face of disgust. "Ooo, yeah, that is kinda gross."

"Well, get it out, will ya?" Louis said, holding his hand out to the lads.

Hesitating, Liam grabbed his hand and plucked the stinger out, tossing it to the ground.

"Geez, it hurts," Louis said.

"Ever been stung before?" Niall asked, and then opened up another pop can.

"Never. This was a first," Louis said.

"Me, neither. I've been told they hurt, though." Niall downed half the can of soda before announcing that he was ready to begin the basketball game again.

Louis got up to join them, not wanting to allow a little bee sting from keeping him from what he enjoys. Then he noticed his hand was bleeding a little. "Start without me, lads. I'll be there in a sec. My hand's just bleeding."

So the boys played while Louis held a napkin to the wound. A few minutes later, when the bleeding had stopped, he told them he was ready, and they handed him the ball.

Suddenly, Niall's eyes went wide as he stared at Louis. "Lou, you've got like a rash or something all over you. It's on your neck and chest."

Liam stopped to stare as well, and Louis looked down. He then noticed little red spots all over his chest and by the looks of Liam, he must have a lot more on his neck that he couldn't see.

"What's going on? This wasn't there a few minutes ago, right?" Louis asked, looking at his arms and hands now.

"No. Maybe it's a heat rash?" Liam suggested.

They started playing another game, deciding to dismiss the symptom as nothing more than the heat messing with him. After two more minutes, Louis noticed he was getting more out of breath than usual, and had hardly even started playing.

"Guys, I'm gonna rest for a sec, okay? I'm feeling a little weird," Louis told them and then sat down on the picnic bench, feeling faint.

"You okay?" Liam was starting to get worried. Louis was breathing heavily and no one else was and they'd been playing longer than him. Another glance at the older boy had him even more worried. "Louis, your hand! It looks swollen!"

Louis looked at the hand that got stung and saw that it was definitely bigger. His heart started beating quicker as he began to panic. "Guys, what's happening?"

"I think it's an allergic reaction to the bee sting," Niall said. "I think we need to get you to the hospital, mate."

They began packing up all their things hastily, throwing things into the car and helping louis inside the vehicle. The hospital was five minutes away and Liam drove quickly down the highway, passing everyone and dodging slow cars on their way. In the meantime, Louis began wheezing and trying hard to catch his breath, but he couldn't.

"Liam, hurry!" Niall shouted.

Louis's hand had swollen twice the size as it was before they left, his wrist double in size as the other one. This was getting serious.

Liam pulled up at the hospital and parked the car right in front of the emergency room doors. Louis could hardly breathe. He was struggling for air, his chest heaving for oxygen.

Workers immediately took him in and got him on a stretcher. The boys weren't allowed to join Louis in the back because of how serious the situation was. Niall just wished that they had warned Harry ahead of time.

Harry was finishing up with a patient, walking down the hall to see about the next one, when frantic shouts were heard from the entry doors. "Patient going into anaphylaxis shock! Needs oxygen!"

Harry stopped to see about this patient with an allergic reaction and almost passed out when he saw who it was they were wheeling in. "Louis?"

An oxygen mask was being held over Louis's face, but it wasn't doing much good. Louis's throat was swelling up, depriving him from precious air.

Harry knew exactly what to do. He grabbed an epi-pen for allergic reactions like this and jammed it into Louis's thigh. Hard. It injected Louis with life-saving medicine, and it would work in no time. He held it to Louis's thigh for several seconds before pulling it out. Then he massaged the injection site with his thumbs for ten more seconds, making sure the medicine was equally distributing into Louis's bloodstream.

Harry ran his hand through Louis's hair, his heart calming once he saw Louis's body stop struggling so hard for breath. Louis was finally able to breathe again, and he was breathing hard and heavily, trying to fill his lungs as quickly as he could.

"That's it, Louis. You're fine. You're going to be okay," Harry reassured him. When Louis started to calm down, he began asking him more questions. "Louis, you scared the heck out me. What happened?"

"Well," Louis began. He was breathing easier now, only slightly out of breath. "A bee stung me when we were at the park."

"You've never been stung before I guess?" Harry asked, putting a hand to Louis's shoulder.

"Never. I got this rash and—" he held up his hand to show Harry. "Look at my hand!"

Harry gasped, taking his wrist gently. "Oh, my, Lou. So this is where you were stung?"

"Yeah, back here," Louis said, pointing to the back of his hand.

"I'll be right back. I'm gonna grab you an ice pack." Harry left and returned after a few seconds. "Here you go. It'll get the swelling down quicker, although the epi-pen will have helped with it, too."

Louis put the ice pack onto his hand, which felt great on his throbbing wound.

"Does your hand hurt, babe?" Harry asked.

"Yeah, a little," Louis admitted.

"You just need to take some medicine like Advil or Ibuprofen when you get home. I think we have some."

Louis nodded.

"So, Lou, we've now learned something very important. You're very allergic to bees, possibly even wasps. I'm gonna send you home with an epi-pen that you need to carry around with you wherever you go. If you're ever stung again, you have to jam it into your outer thigh just like I did when you came in, okay?"

"Hopefully it'll never happen again 'cause bee stings hurt and so does that pen," Louis said, making Harry chuckle.

"I know, honey, and I hope you never need it." Harry looked at his watch. "Two more hours of work. How I'm gonna keep working after this episode is beyond me. You got my heart pumping, Lou. I'm still running on adrenaline. My hands are even shaking."

Louis took one of Harry's hands. "I'm sorry. I didn't mean to make you panic. I'm feeling better, though."

"I'm glad," Harry said, kissing Louis's cheek. "The other boys came with you?"

"Yeah, Liam and Niall are in the waiting room."

"Okay, have them take you home and I'll be there in a couple hours, love."

Louis was about to head out and follow Harry, but then he remembered something. "Oh, I almost forgot. You up for a movie tonight at our place? Niall suggested it."

"Yeah, sure. I'll look forward to it."

Two hours later, after Harry's shift, Harry arrived home.

"How's my little bee-stinging baby?" Harry said playfully.

Louis appeared from the kitchen to greet him at the door. "Doing good. Swelling's gone down some."

Harry looked at his hand and smiled. "Good. It does look better. The rash is slowly disappearing, too, I see."

Louis nodded.

"How's the pain?"

"The medicine's helping," Louis said.

Just then, the doorbell rang. It was Liam and Niall. Harry opened the door and let them in.

"Hey guys. These are my heroes," Harry said. "Thanks for bringing Louis in so quickly when you did."

"Oh, not a problem," Liam said. "He was starting to scare us with all the weird symptoms."

"You mates are the best. What do you guys want? Anything. Anything at all. We've got ice cream!" Harry said, wanting to reward them for saving his love.

"Ice cream's good," Niall said.

The four of them had Ice Cream Sundaes as they sat and watched a movie. Louis curled up with Harry, and Harry brought him in close. Having someone almost die on you right before your eyes really changes a person. You never want to take anything for granted, and never had Harry felt so much love for someone as he did this night.
