31. " Mysterious Disappearances "

One late afternoon at the 10th Division barracks, Yuuki was knocking at Toushirou's office door a couple of times now without an answer.

"I guess I shouldn't just barge in.", Yuuki mumbled to herself.

She was about to leave when she saw one of Toushirou's subordinates.

"If you're looking for Hitsugaya-taicho then he went to the 1st Division barracks for the regular report. He told me that if you happen to pass by and if he still isn't back by then you can wait for him at his office.", the Shinigami said and opens the door to let her in. "You can sit on the couch while you wait. Now if you'll excuse me, I'll be heading off now.", he bows lightly at her and left.

Yuuki returned the gesture. "Okay, thank you."

Afterwards, she makes her way towards the bookshelf to look for something she can read while waiting.

Almost an hour later, the door suddenly slams open revealing the young captain with an irritated look.

"That Matsumoto!!", Toushirou yelled in irritation.

Startled, Yuuki screamed in surprise and dropped the book she was reading.

Realizing there was another person in the office, Toushirou turns to the source and saw Yuuki by the bookshelf. "Oh Yuuki, sorry. How long have you been here?"

Yuuki recovered immediately from her mini-heart attack and bends down to pick up the book. "I'm not sure, I got so engrossed in reading that I lost track of time."

"You like to read?", the young captain questioned.

"Yeah! It's one of my hobbies.....", Yuuki trailed off. "Umm... did something happen? You seem stressed out."

Toushirou sighs, making his way to his desk and summons a Jigokucho out of nowhere. "It's nothing big... Matsumoto just slacked off again..."

Yuuki smiles sympathetically. "Same old problem, huh?"

Yuuki resumes reading while Toushirou nods curtly pinching the bridge of his nose. He sits on his chair waiting for something.

After a while, a familiar voice was finally heard.

"Hai, Matsumoto here."

Rangiku's voice was coming from the Jigokuchou. It works as a communication for the Shinigamis.

Yuuki glances at the Jigokuchou furtively. (Who needs phones when you have those.), she thought amusedly and resumes reading.

"Matsumoto, you idiot!", Toushirou yelled at the Jigokucho which startled Yuuki again. "Do you have any idea how many times I tried to call you?! Why didn't you make the regular report?!", he questioned irritatedly.

"I'm sorry, taicho! I was working the whole time. But now we've just finished the assignment, so now Nanao and I are going for some-"

An irk mark appeared on the young captain's head and cut her off. "Get back here immediately!"

"Oh, come on, taicho! There's nothing wrong with having a little fun."

Yuuki can 'feel' Rangiku's pout from the Jigokuchou.

"We can't spare the time! It's always like this! You're always doing this to me every single time!", Toushirou complained.

Witnessing the whole conversation between the two earned a sweatdrop from Yuuki. "Why does this feel like déjà vu?", she muttered to herself.

Toushirou ends the conversation and heaves a heavy sigh. Rubbing a hand across his face, he heard someone stiffle a laugh. "What's funny?", he asked Yuuki, not accusingly, with a raised eyebrow.
