Chapter 2
(Brittany’s POV)
I was suddenly awoken as something plush hit me in the back of my head. I looked up dazed to see a grinning Lauren standing there, pillow in hand. Janet was behind her hanging over Lauren’s shoulder, also grinning, “Better get up and get ready sleepy head! The boys are here to figure out your powers.” She said in a singsong way.
I jumped out of bed and rushed to get dressed in a light green, strap tank top with a low lying back; so it wouldn't get ripped by my wings, along pair of blank skinny jeans and my grey sneakers. Then rushed into the bathroom and brushed and tied up my long hair into a rough ponytail before walking out the door ready for the day.
I was greeted in the corridor by to very handsome guys who go by the name of Riley and Haden. I smiled at the sight of them because even though we just met yesterday they were the closest things I had to friends right now, well besides the twins.
“So what are we doing today?” I asked trying to break the silence that had started after I joined them in the hall.
“Well, we’re going to find out what your element is!” Riley said clapping his hands rapidly, all excited like a five year old.
“Oh wow, really!” a jolt of excitement suddenly jumped up my spine and a nervous tingle sat at the pit of my stomach, “So what is there to choose, I mean, receive again?” I though about it but couldn’t think straight with the excitement bubbling up inside of me.
“There’s Water, Earth, Fire, Air, Light/Darkness or Electricity but there is only like two three kids who have Electricity it’s kinda of rare. It doesn’t seem that too many kids have air either but I don’t know whether that coincidence or what,” Haden responded listing all the possibilities.
I though them through carefully imagining what it would be like to have each one and excitement jolted through me again. Too think that anyone of these elements has been bottled up inside of me for this long without even knowing. A smile crept across my face and the excitement settled and found a place right next to the small pit of nervousness.
I was in a daze and just let my feet walk along side Riley and Haden’s and didn’t even take not of where we were going. When we arrived at a cream door outside a large shed style of building.
“Here we are at the gym. You ready?” Riley turned toward me with a smile, excitement zipping through his piercing blue eye. The thought of a gym being in a place that looked so much like a mansion made me laugh on the inside. I nodded and we preceded though the door into a single and very large room. Lines littered the rubber-like red floor and bright rays of sun filtered through the windows along the top of the cream walls just under the lowered panels of the roof. A group of people caught my gaze when they turned around to greet us.
As we walked over to them Riley and Haden grouped up with them. One of them caught me eye however because of his unusually white hair, I mean pure white but I stopped staring when Haden came back over and started to talk.
“You ready?” I nodded hesitantly, “Ok then go stand over there while the rest of us set up k,” he pointed off in the middle of nowhere but I did as he requested.
As I stood out in the middle of the gym I felt so odd, exposed if you must and to make matters worse as I looked around at the older kids starting to form a circle around me I noticed one of the guys looking me up and down. When my eyes met his spectacularly coloured ones they looked at me weirdly and he gave me one of those ‘nods’. I turned away and found Riley standing next to Haden both with their hands in the air. Two balls of matter floated in the air near them: a clump of earth near Riley and a sphere of water near Haden. I looked amazed at them and as I spun in a circle I saw five other balls of matter and their benders standing spread out around me. The boy whom had been perving on me had a ball of fire hovering in the airspace near him and the boy with the white hair had his hands up too but I couldn’t see anything but when I noticed the movement of his hair and clothes I assumed he was controlling air. A girl was holding her arms out wide and separated a ball of bright light over to her right/my left and a ball of pure darkness to her left/my right. I just kept turning and gawking.
Then Mr. Clark appeared between two of them and continued over to me before he begun to talk, “Hello again Miss. Lawson. We meet again.”
“Hello sir,” I greeted in return.
“Today we are going to find out your element as I presumably think you already know,” I nodded as he continued, “Alright then, well these five people are holding their element in the air loosely and what you have to do is close your eyes, hold out your hands and find that pool of energy that lives inside of you and dive into it. Once you do that the element will come toward you.” With that he motioned me to proceed as he walked away backward.
I closed my eyes and extended my arms out to either side of me and concentrated the only thing that could be heard was the occasional crackle of the flame, the light whoosh of the wind and lapping of the water. Everything in my mind was blackness but the harder I thought about that pool of power the more visible it became. When it was transparent no more the silver liquid that lay there rippled before I delved into it going deeper and deeper.
A strong tingle of electricity conducted through my bones as I felt the air around me change. My fingers tingled and my hands shook ever so slightly. The sound of water splashing and dirt smashing sounded along with Riley’s voice, “Holy smokes! Now that is some awesome shit!”
“Britt, open your eyes it’s amazing!” Haden added.
I opened my eyes slowly and as I did so I noticed that things were whizzing around me and the wind was whipping my hair around. My eyes widened and suddenly the tingles running through me fizzled and everything dropped to the ground, my hair fell in a messy manner along with everyone else’s.
“Congratulations, Miss. Lawson! You’re an air bender.” Mr. Clark said as he walked back toward me.
A pair of arms rapped around my middle and started to spin me around in circles and we both started laughing. I knew it was Riley because of the crazed laughter and also the fact that I could see Haden’s beaming face whizzing past every time we turned around. He finally put me down and we both stumbled around a bit but Haden came over and wrapped an arm around my waist.
“That was cool, there was a sphere of wind going around you and it was just so cool!” Riley seemed a little lost for words.
“In other words we haven’t seen something like that for as long as we’ve been doing this, which is awhile for me.” Haden said almost astounded, “Usually the element comes and hold in the palm of your hands.”
Really? They hadn’t seen anything like it before? Then why did it happen to me I mean I’m a late bloomer? So many questions were scrabbled in my mind but all I could manage out was, “Really?” which was replied with vigorous nods, they kind of looked like bubble heads.
All the other people were just staring at me with blank, bewilderment until the principal dismissed them and they went off to do whatever it is they were doing before this.
It was only then that I noticed the clump of sparkling balls of light hovering over in the distance near the principal who gestured me over to him. I obeyed and as I walked closer the glowing orbs started to turn into illuminated silhouettes. I kept my eye on them as I walked closer. My eyes flicked to the one hovering over Mr. Clark’s shoulder as it moved over to the others. By the time I reached Mr. Clark the thing had come back with another one from the cluster.
Now I was much closer I could se that the little silhouettes had wings that were beating rapidly like those of a dragonfly. What are they, Fairies?
“Brittany, this is your Guardian, uh, I’m sorry dear could you run your name by me again?” He asked turning to the fairy-like creatures. One of them suddenly made itself visible as the illuminate light faded to reveal a tiny girl wearing a red dress made of petals, a green vine rapped around her middle. Her red tinted mahogany brown hair flowed down her back in waves and curled in every direction at the bottom. Her emerald eyes twinkled and swirled with shyness, “My name, is, is Evangeline, sir.” She stuttered slightly in her melodic voice. This little creature was so beautiful and dainty I was amazed.
