Dylan was a good friend of June's. He owned the local café: He had known June for many years and was often the person she would go to when she wanted to clear her head.
"You know they had sex in John's office, can you believe that bitch?"
She was sitting across from Dylan while he poured sugar into his own coffee. The café was quiet and comforting. The walls were exposed brick and the colours were warm and subtle.
"Twenty years of marriage and he didn't even have the decency to divorce me first. Instead, he's having an affair with some dumb bimbo. I hate him"
Dylan took June's hand and held it for a moment.
"June, you know he loves you. I know that deep down he wants what you want"
"A divorce? Because don't worry John, one is coming your way!"
"June, you don't want a divorce. You want change"
"Do I Dylan? To me it feels like all I am doing is holding onto something that doesn't exist. I barely believe how happy we were."
"June, I know you. I am your friend. John is the man for you. You do love each other. You need to give things a final chance. Neither of you have tried to rectify your marriage which is why things have gotten so out of control."
"Of course I still love him but I don't think he loves me so much anymore and I am not the same girl he met when he was young. Maybe the old me knew what to say and had the patience to weather the storm but not anymore."
"If you love him, he will come back to you, you'll see: you just need to unfreeze the ice-cube. Stop putting so much pressure on how things ought to be and just relax"
"So you think I should sit back and accept his dilly dally dalliance? I have feelings too Dylan and I am sick of being his stress ball"
"Why haven't you left him?"
"We have three kids and we have been together for so long. It's hard but I know it's what's best"
"I know that many people will give me stick for telling you that things can go back to how they were but they can"
June began to cry. She wanted so badly to believe what Dylan was saying but she looked into John's eyes when she pointed out his lipstick stain and she saw that deep down there was some kind of relief. He secretly wanted it to end. Caroline was the final blow. She couldn't thaw the ice while she remained in the frosted settlement that had engulfed her marriage. They could never unfreeze this ice-cube.
