The taxi pulls into the driveway of my home, my old home. I thank him, pay him, and gather my bags from the trunk. I roll my suitcase behind me. I left most of my belongings in Kansas, I don't need them here. I only brought back what I took there in the first place. I knock on the door to my home.
"Leigha!" My mother's familiar voice squeaks as she opens the door. She wraps her arms around my shoulders, squishing me. "I'm so glad you're home!" She beams. She looks much more different than she does in Skype, I think to myself. Her dark hair now has been peppered with gray streaks. Her eyes are crinkled at the corners, and she has wrinkles forming on her face.
"I am too, mother," I smile.
"Well, get your bum inside!" I walk into the house slowly, taking in the scene before me. The walls of the small building have been painted sky blue, and she must have bought more furniture. On the far side of the living room, a small white couch stretches across the wall. In the corner, there is a white chair with an ottoman, and to my left, there is a T.V. stand with a new flat screen in place of the old telly we had.
"You've changed it up a bit, mum?"
"Yeah, it took me a while, but it looks nice, don't you think?" I nod, looking around the room I spent most of my childhood in.
"It looks fantastic," I smile, looking over at my mother, who is grinning from ear to ear.
She claps her hands together. "Lunch?"
"Mum, I just got off of a nine hour plane from America. I am pretty jet lagged."
"Hush your whining, I haven't seen you in seven years, Leigha."
"Yeah, yeah. I'm going to take a nap, a quick nap, okay?"
"Alright, fine," she sighs, still smiling. I take my bags to my old bedroom, where my old, small twin bed sits. The sheets have been washed recently, and my old bedroom is still well kept. Looking at it now, without the movie posters, the pictures I used to take when I was small, it causes my throat to tighten. I miss the old pastel pink walls. Now they are white and barren. I sigh and place my bags against the door, and trudge over to the bed, flopping face first into it.
...
"Leigha, darling, it's two already! You said a short nap," my mother shakes me from my sleep. I groan, and pull the sheets over my head. "Please, honey." I sigh and roll out of the bed. "Good morning sleepy head," my mother smiles down at me. "Guess what?"
"What?" I ask groggily.
"I found you an apartment. It's only about ten miles from here. You'll need to get a job to pay for it, but there's an opening at 'Brew'd awakening,'" she tells me. I snap awake.
"Really? Oh thank you, thank you, thank you!" I exclaim, standing up and engulfing her in my arms.
"You're welcome," she laughs, pushing me back by my shoulders, and looking at my face. Her eyes well with tears. "My little Leigha is all grown up," she grins.
"It's okay, mum. I'll be here as often as I can, and we can have dinner sometimes, too. I can't believe you found a flat for me. When do I move in?" I smile at her.
"Anytime you're ready. I've got it ready, and it's already furnished. I'll be paying for your cable, but that's it!"
"You don't have to do tha-"
"I insist." I grin at her happily.
"So.. I could move in today?"
"Well," she shrugs a shoulder. "I was planning on it. Just so you can get used to it." I nod.
"Can't wait."
