[CHAPTER TWO: SECRET]

secret
adjective
1.
the state of keeping something hidden

THE GROUP OF STUDENTS EXCITEDLY made their way through the lab, their eyes flickering from one thing to the next. People - scientists - rushed around, majority wearing stark white lab coats that made the room look brighter than it needed to be.

That's why one man caught Margo's attention. He was dressed in all black, moving like a shadow through the crowd of students and Oscorp workers. She felt the sudden urge to follow him, so she did just that. He lead her around to a quieter part of the lab that only had two or three people in it.

He came to a stop before the wall of the room, making her confused. He then touched the wall, making the place where he touched erupt in small ripples. A small keypad appeared, and he punched in some numbers before waiting patiently. After a second, the wall began to fade away, revealing a room.

Margo gasped. She had never seen something like that happen before. The man stepped inside the room, Margo quickly slipping in after him.

Inside, there were whirring machines that sometimes puffed clouds of smoke. The room was bustling with more scientists who were all so busy they didn't even notice the girl that had snuck in.

Following her instincts now, she walked around until she came across a door that read SERUM A9, SUBJECT FC-2, AUTHORIZED PERSONNEL ONLY. Without thinking twice, she pushed the door open.

Margo shot up in her bed, sweat slowly rolling down her forehead and neck, her face as pale as wax. She frantically looked down at her hands, seeing without surprise that they were disappearing from sight, starting from her fingertips and travelling up her arm. Her skin tingled, something she usually felt when she woke up from these nightmares.

Well, they weren't exactly nightmares, so to speak. They were memories that Margo forced herself not to think about when she was conscious. She hadn't told anyone about what had happened that day, and she planned to keep it that way. It was her one and only secret.

Peter and Harry sat next to each other in their math class, talking freely while they waited for the teacher to hand back their test results.

"I have an idea," Harry said suddenly, startling Peter.

"Harry, every time you have an idea it always ends up with me getting grounded," Peter groaned, making his friend laugh.

"I swear this one's harmless," Harry crossed his hand over his heart  as if he was taking an oath. He wiggled his eyebrows. "Maybe, you could help Margo study. Tutor her."

"Study? She doesn't need me to help her, she's doing perfectly fine," Peter tried saying, but Harry gestured over to where she was sitting. She had her head down on her desk, her test clutched tightly in her hand, a bold C- sitting on the top corner. "Okay, maybe she does need my help."

"Exactly," Harry said, grinning. "Besides, we all know that in three months, four at the most, you guys will be making out over your textbooks."

To say Peter's cheeks were red would be an understatement. They were flaming, heat flushing down his neck and forearms. "W-we won't, she's not-I don't-"

"Calm down Parker, I was just messing with you," Harry shushed him, a sly grin on his face. Peter narrowed his eyes at him, knowing full well that Harry just liked to torment him. "Seriously though, you should tutor her. It might earn you a few extra brownie points."

Peter pondered the idea carefully. Finally, he came to his decision.

"Hey Margo," he called softly, bundling up his nerves and locking them away in the back of his mind. "Do you need help studying? I could tutor you."

Relief instantly flooded Margo's face. "Thanks Pete, that would be great," she sighed, rubbing her temples.

Peter turned back around, a smile growing on his lips. He saw Harry winking at him out of the corner of his eye as he tried to keep the excitement off his face.
