Chapter Seventy-Seven

Uriah's POV

"Can I shoot a muffin off of your head?"

Marlene cracks a smile that is pure and innocent as she whispers, "Just like Initiation. . . " Her voice gets louder like she never intended to tell me what she recalled before, "I bet you can't shoot accurately."

"Okay. We can try it again, for a second time." I retort.

"What flavor is it?" Mar questions, lifting her brows as she studies the muffin resting in my hand.

"Your favorite," I grin sheepishly, "chocolate."

Marlene smiles and skips to the targets. Once she stands in front of the row of targets, she goes to stand in front of one. Her head almost reaches the top of the target. I pick up the gun- already filled with paintballs- and begin tossing it lightly back and forth in my hands. I take a couple paintballs, put them into the gun, and lock it. Picking up a green paintball, I squeeze it in my hands. Marlene erupts in giggles before yelling at me to hurry up. I just laugh and stand in place, ready to shoot the chocolate muffin.

"Wait," She announces before taking a bite of the muffin.

"Ready or you still hungry?" I mock.

Marlene shouts through a mouthful of food, "Ready."

Getting ready to shoot, I adjust my eyes to look at Mar. My brown eyes never leave her light ones as I shoot the blue paintball towards the chocolate chip muffin. It whizzes through the air, slices the dark muffin, and plasters paint over the desert. Marlene laughs and takes the muffin off of her head. She studies the muffin, trying to see if there are any clean spots to eat from. I guess that one bite before did not fill her up enough. Blue paint is smeared all over the muffin so she decides not to eat it.

"Wait. . ." I say, remembering the purpose of this, "there might be some clean parts inside."

She rolls her eyes, "Fine since you're so cheap and won't buy me a dam-"

Marlene goes to study the inside of the muffin but she spots something black instead. I watch as she takes out the black object. A box. Squeals erupt from Marlene as she grabs the petite black box that holds a single object, yet that object holds the answer to being with my love forever. Before she can open it, I snatch in from her. Mar pouts by crossing her arms and making a sad, puppy-dog face unlike the one in our Aptitude Tests. And I get on one knee.

"Marlene, I love you more then words can say. I love you from the moon and back. We are like two puzzle pieces meant to be. I'm Dauntless cake and you're the icing. Without the icing, the cake isn't any good. I know that our love is eternal but I'd like to make it official. I want to spend every minute of my life with you. You are mine and I'm yours. That's the way it's been all along. Please, do me the honor of marrying me."

Marlene stands there, frozen for a minute or two.

Chapter Seventy-Eight

Tris's POV

You know that feeling you get when you wake up at 2:00 in the morning, like someone's sitting there in the dark, watching you? Studying you, every move you make from a safe distance that's hidden where you cannot see them. You try to shake off the eerie feeling but it's no use. Maybe you even go and check if someone's there. You might be surprised at what you see.

Well, I got that feeling except it was the opposite. There wasn't any serial killer standing in the closet or under the bed. There wasn't a ghost standing in the corner. This wasn't even my room, let alone my own house. I have no idea where I was but I thought Tobias was there but in reality, he was not. I felt along the mattress to see if it was an illusion. It wasn't. And there wasn't any heat left from his body. The mattress was as cold as a rock. A really cold rock.

~~~
Wind rushes around me, swirling me like a tornado. I wrap my dark gray robe over my bare legs and arms, trying to conceal me from the brisk, cool morning wind. My eyes scan the abandoned buildings surrounding my silhouette. I still have no idea where I was and even if Tobias brought me there. He could be locked up for all I know right now. All that's left is the baby and me. Me and the baby that grows in my stomach.
"Little girl." Says a raspy voice in an alley way.
The Abnegation part of me wants to go and help the person. The Erudite part of me knows that it's not safe and the Dauntless part of me wants to jump off of a really tall building and then punch that guy in the face for calling me little.
I don't act like Abnegation, Erudite, or Dauntless. I just stop, abruptly in my tracks.
"Psst."
"Over here, girl."
Deciding to be Abnegation, I go down the alley way.
"I knew ya was smart, what are ya Erudite?" Croaks the hoarse voice in front of me. An old man stands before me.
I shake my head, unable to speak.
"Abnegation?" He studies my figure, "you're a little Abnegation girl that's strayed far away from home. Aren't ya?"
I decide not to answer because I'm afraid I would either snap on him or burst into tears.
"Got anythin' to eat?"
I remember my father and how he would always tell me to keep extra food in my book bag for times like this.
I shake my head again, afraid to cry at the thought of my dead parents and the life I left behind at Dauntless.
"What are ya doin' out so early. Shouldn't ya be takin' your Aptitude Test. It is that time of the year?"
I shake my head, remembering when I took my test and went how early, how the old, factionless man stopped me.
"I already have a faction. Dauntless," I say quietly and start to walk down the alleyway back to the house is slept in. I need to go back. This is to much to bear. This factionless man reminds me too much of my past and how much I am not like my parents. How ashamed they would be of me. I fold my arms over my robe and rest them on my stomach.
The man stays silent as I walk away. He catches up to me and holds up a news article before mentioning, "Do you know this man, his name is Tobias Eaton."
I try to suppress a gasp and lie, "Nope. Never seen him."
"Please, It would save me." The factionless man pleads.
I shake my head and bite my lip, before turning and walking away from him.
"You're lying!" He shouts after me, "You're a bloody filthy liar!"
A/N: Sorry I haven't updated on a while. I have to go to my travel soccer game later.
What did Tobias do to the factionless man?
Will Marlene say yes?
Thank you so much😘
