She was pulled from her thoughts when "Huh. I haven't seen you smile in forever." Her smile faded as she was pulled back into reality. "You should do it more often. You have a nice smile." He said as he gave her a kind smile.
At that complement she blushed slightly. She hadn't gotten a complement in a while. It's probably because she hadn't really talked to many people in a while.
"You've got some crumbs on your face." He chuckled a little before wiping them off. Him doing that did not help he blush.
She couldn't believe she was actually warming up to someone. She had forgotten how it felt to have friends.
That moment was short lived when she got a text from her brother.
Jonah: Shelby...
Shelby: Yeah...What is it?
Jonah: I'm sorry.
Shelby: What did you do? Did you eat my chocolate bar? XD
Jonah: Shelby...I'm sorry.
Shelby: What?
Jonah: ...
Shelby:What did you do!?!
Jonah: I'm sorry...
Jonah: It's Kait and Dad...
Shelby: What? What happened?!
Jonah: ...Meet me by the park...
Shelby: Is now really the time for the park!?!
Jonah: Shelby, Just come, Please.
Shelby removed her attention from her phone only to find Miles still talking. "...Where does Napoleon keep his armies? In his sleeves!" He laughed to himself.
Shelby stood up from her chair abruptly while Miles was laughing. He grabbed her wrist once again and said "Aww come on I'm not that bad. If you stay I promise no more lame jokes." He begged.
"No it's not that." She said as she released her wrist and began to leave.
"Then what?" He said as he stumbled out of his chair and followed her. "It's my dad and little sister." She finished as she headed for the exit.
"Well what happened?" He asked concerned with a worried face.
"I don't know but I gotta go." She said as she left the school immediately without even getting permission.
He followed her close behind.
They ran all the way there. Shelby stopped in her tracks. Now she understood why he wanted her to come to the park.
Right there, right in front of the park there they were. Her dad and Kaitlyn were lying there.
They had gotten into a crash while her dad was driving her to school. It was bad.
Shelby tried to run up to them but a police officer stopped her. "I'm sorry ma'am but it is very important that you stay away." Said the officer.
"No I don't think you understand their my family!" She shouted. "I'm sorry ma'am but- Hey!" He shouted as she completely ignored him and ran right up to Kaitlyn.
She was lying on the ground beneath some rubble. She was covered in dirt particles and there was blood on her forehead from where her head had hit the glass.
Shelby pulled Kait close and cradled her in her arms. "Kait it's okay. I'm here now." She looked over to Jonah who was kneeling beside her dad.
Jonah was crying. He was trying to get her dad to wake up butt he wouldn't. "Dad, wake up!" He shouted. "Not you too! Dad you can't!" Cried Jonah.
Miles watched from afar. He didn't really know what to do. He felt bad for Shelby. He knew about her mother, and now this.
Kait looked up at Shelby her eyelids were hardly staying open and her breathing was labored. Shelby could tell Kait was trying as hard as she could.
"It's okay Kait the ambulance are on their way. They'll be here any moment. Just stay awake, okay?" Shelby tried her best to keep her little sister awake.
"Ma'am, you shouldn't be over here." Said the police officer.
Kait looked into Shelby's eyes and said "Please don't leave me." She begged. "Don't worry, I won't let you go." Shelby said honestly.
"Ma'am-" The officer was saying until he was interrupted. "Dude, chill out! Can't you see her little sisters in pain. The best thing for her right now is to have her big sister by her side." Miles told the officer.
Upon hearing that the officer walked away. Jonah was still trying to wake up their dad. "Dad, please... not you...not yet." He whispered tears in his eyes.
"Big sister?" Kait said. "Can you sing me a song?" She asked.
"Yeah of course. What song?" Asked Shelby as more tears rolled down her face. "You pick." Kait answered.
"O-okay." Shelby's voice cracked.
She began singing the first song that came to her mind.
"~I remember tears streaming down your face when I said I'd never let you go, When all those shadows almost killed your light...I remember you said don't leave me here alone, But all that's dead and gone and passed tonight...~" She sang as she cried. She didn't care how weird it looked or how bad she sounded. She would sing for her little sister.
"~Just close your eyes the sun is going down, you'll be alright no one can hurt you now, come morning light, You and I'll be safe and sound...~" She sang to her little sister as everyone watched her, but she didn't care. Jonah was crying on to his dads chest. He was unresponsive. Miles was watching Shelby sing to her sister as tears threatened to fall from his eyes.
"~Don't you dare look out your window darling everything's on fire, the war outside our door keeps raging on, Hold on to this lullaby, even when the music's gone, gone...~" Shelby's tears continued to fall from her eyes onto Kait's face.
"~Just close your eyes, the sun is going down, you'll be alright no one can hurt you now, come morning light you and I'll be safe and sound...~" Kait's eyes slowly closed. She didn't have anymore strength left in her. She fought with everything she had but in the end it wasn't enough.
"~Just close your eyes, you'll be alright, come morning light, You and I'll be safe and sound...~" Kait's breathing slowly came to a stop. But before it did she sang so quietly that if Shelby was any further she wouldn't have heard it "~Safe and sound~" Kait had finished the song with her last breath. She had known she wouldn't make it but she wanted her last memory to be her big sisters voice.
"Kait, Kait no! Kait, please! Please!" Shelby cried.
The ambulance showed up but they were to late. The ambulance put Kait on a stretcher and put her in the car with her dad.
Shelby was left crying on the ground along with her brother. Shelby was on her knees crying. 'Kait was too young. Why did she have to go now? What is the meaning of this? What is the reason for this? She didn't deserve this.' Thought Shelby as she cried.
Miles was about to walk up to her until he saw Jonah walking up to her. He figured she needed her brother the most right now so he stayed back.
Miles felt so bad for them. It was hard when he lost his mom in a fire. So he could relate to her. But she just lost her mom, dad and her beloved little sister. She was probably in so much pain right now.
He watched as Jonah comforted his younger sister and hugged her tight.
Hello thanks for reading through yet another chapter of mine. I'm actually kinda liking writing this story and I would like to say thanks to my friend Janeeka for inspiring me to do it. Thanks Janeeka! ^^ I used the song safe and sound from Taylor Swift. Personally I like the Nightcore version. Sorry about the sad ending but the story has a mind of it's own. Thanks for reading, God bless you and have a nice day!
