Chase unlocked the door and pushed it open. I walked inside.
Chase's apartment was big and airy, sparsely furnished. A double bed was in one corner. A small, sleek dresser nearby. A kitchenette in another corner with a small chair at the island. There was a couch near the bed. The apartment had high ceilings, concrete floors, and large, high windows. There was a neat black stone fireplace in the middle of the room on one of the small rooms of a pillar. The couch faced the fireplace. There weren't any overhead lights, but there were many floor lamps and they were all on, creating a soft golden glow to the big, open room. The only door other than the front door was open and led to a bathroom.
"Come on." Chase walked past me and into the apartment.
He walked over to the bed and grabbed one of the pillows. Then he went to the couch and set it down. "You can take the bed," he said, grabbing a thickly knit maroon blanket. "Um, thanks."
"I need to shower," he told me. I sat down uneasily on the edge of the bed. "You should go to sleep. You're going to be a wreck tomorrow." I sighed. "Yeah, probably." After a moment, I added, "What are we doing tomorrow?" Chase shrugged. "I don't know. I'll probably be tired tomorrow, too, so we can just do knives and guns." "That sounds nice." When Chase didn't reply, I looked around. The bathroom door we shut, and I heard the shower running. I decided to lie down.
I was ambushed by the smell of Chase on his bed. His cologne, a touch of sweat, and the general male smell. I breathed deeply, then my eyes shot open: what the hell was I doing? I awkwardly got into a comfortable position on top of the mess of dark blankets. It was warm in Chase's apartment, and I was still kinda hot.
After a while, Chase came out of the bathroom. The light from the bathroom sort of blinded me, but I could make out Chase in a towel going quickly over to the dresser and grabbing clothes, then going back into the bathroom. All I could see was a smear of color for his body and a dash of grey for the towel. I fell asleep before Chase came back out.
I woke up, startled, to a harsh alarm. I sat up.
I heard Chase groan and stand up. I couldn't see him through the darkness. I heard a loud thud. "Shit," Chase hissed. I heard the slap of bare feet on concrete. Make that one foot-I could hear Chase awkwardly hopping. The beeping stopped, then the lights turned on.
Chase was leaning against the wall, holding one foot, wearing black mesh shorts and a black sleeveless shirt that showed off his killer biceps. His hair was extremely messy, and I couldn't help but laugh. "What?" he said, looking up at me. I just stared at his hair. Chase raised his hand and felt his hair, then grinned. "Oh." He laughed too. "Come on. Let's get dressed." I raised an eyebrow and swung my legs over the edge of the bed. I stretched. "Um," I said. Chase laughed again, then limped to the dresser. "Are you okay, Chase?" I asked, slightly amused, but slightly concerned. "Yeah. I just stubbed my toe." I cringed.
Chase fumbled in the drawers and finally pulled out a bundle of black cloth. He tossed it to me, but it landed several feet away from the bed. "Shit," he said. "What is it?" I asked, grinning. "Sweatpants. It's always kinda cold in the morning." "Oh. Thank you."
I got out of bed, and leaning on my thigh with one hand, bent down, and picked up the sweatpants. I straightened, holding the sweatpants. Chase, mid-reach into a drawer, was staring at me. "What?" I said. He was silent, his lips slightly parted. I pulled the sweatpants over my super short shorts. They were really big and baggy, but soft and comfortable.
I hoped what I thought wasn't true.
As Chase and I walked silently to the dormitory through the dark Dauntless compound, I tried to push away one thought. I finally gave up.
