Catarina Zhalkov-Novak's POV

I laughed loudly and hugged him tight.

Dylan was making my day somewhat easier. If medicine to the hearts was a person, it'd be him. Even as his Pack rebels to lynch me, with no knowledge of my identity other than "a witch", he's made the most of my stay.

"I thought Alphas where supposed to be angry souls, always broody and crossed arms," I said, smiling widely.

He cocked an eyebrow. "That I like you doesn't mean I'm this nice to everyone."

I smiled wider. "Do you have a mate?" I asked him, trying to make it casual. Alphas and the lost woman of their life isn't a topic you just kick in. It's sensitive, it's hopes, dreams, vulnerability.

"I have a mate, I just haven't found her," he said, shrugging and looking down at a chess piece on his table.

"Mates don't come for free," I muttered sinking in the couch. How I miss mine, and I pay the price to our distance in tears of blood.

"And I thought I was going to get depressive on the mate-talk," he laughed.

I stuck my tongue out to him.

"You shouldn't be wondering around." I rolled my eyes. "Seriously," he pressed on the issue. "Beautiful women like you... something distasteful is bound to occur."

"Worry about me when you find your mate," I fired back.

"Okay," he laughed, "shit."

I shook my head, smiling.

"Talking about mates, why did you humiliated, dumped and embarrassed— without mercy or remorse— the Alpha King?"

I took a deep breath. When he put it like that... "I don't know if I can trust you."

"I haven't tried to get in your pants, that's a start. I haven't dumped you back in the palace either."

I chuckled and grabbed a grape, peeling it with my nails. "It was an act," I admitted. "Lies."

"Most people believed that when you started crying. Now most people think you're a whore and a gold digger when you openly broke his soul."

I frowned. "It was an act," I said, sadness again speaking through me. "You know how strong is a bond with your mate. He wouldn't have let me go if I hadn't... You know."

"Why were you acting?"

"To get rid of the vampires," I told him and my voice dropped an octave, while speaking of my royal duties. "I am Luna Queen, Dylan. I am your Queen and it is my duty to protect you, among all my other pups. Breaking your King's heart would keep the vampires off my kingdom and my people's land. I am a threat to my people."

"When are you planning to call your mate? My Queen, Luna, you can't deny what happened in the morning–"

"Don't." A tear escaped my eyes and Dylan moved closer to wipe it away.

I felt it very clearly. Dimitri was with another woman but as much I wanted to deny it, Dimitri was torn beyond repair. I did that to him, you know? I can still sense it, his wolf's unease and depression, loneliness, madness.
