Potato Dave couldn't be like the other kids. They would get to dress up and go to peoples houses and get free candy. But Potato Dave's parents said it was too dangerous. People put poison in the candy, or at least that is what they told him. People get stabbed at night when they are walking from house to house they said. It was a bad holiday. Potato Dave wanted to believe them, but it was hard. The neighbors would walk home tonight carrying buckets full of candy. He had even heard of houses giving out toys and sometimes money.

Potato Dave lay in bed, listening to the noises outside his window. People walking around, laughing, having fun, and probably eating a ton of candy. Potato Dave was jealous. He rolled over on his side and went to sleep.

A while later, he heard his parents talking. "Steve's daughter ended up getting sick and now has fifteen cavities from all that Halloween candy," his mother said, "That is so unhealthy." His father shook his head. "You would think they would have some control over that child. That's going to be an expensive trip to the dentist." Potato Dave was glad he wasn't sick and didn't have cavities. He had never had a cavity. Maybe his parents were right. Maybe it was better this way.
