A Better Souvenir

The blue hedgehog's eyes darted from the writing on the page to the shimmering gold at the end of the bed. It was hard keeping a talking sword hidden, but he had managed to do it over these years, mainly from the help of Caliburn deciding to act as a quiet inanimate object whenever anyone else was around. But it appeared that something was wrong, or at least that's what Sonic thought.

“What's up?” The blue hedgehog asked, placing the book he had been reading down on the bedside table, he then crawled to the end of the bed and picked the sword up.

“There appears to be some disturbance with this reality,” The sword spoke in a hushed manner.

“Huh? I've had you for years and nothing's happened,” Sonic looked over the sword with confusion, sitting up on the bed and lying the sword over his crossed legs.

“No, it is not my appearance here that has affected the reality. It is of another, of which feels familiar to me. But being behind these walls have dimmed my judgement of who it could be.”

The blue hedgehog groaned, rolling his eyes, “And let me guess, you want me to take you outside. You understand the type of image I would be posing to the others if they saw me carrying a sword?”

Just as Sonic finished his question to the inanimate object, a two-tailed kit opened the door without any warning.

Sonic quickly put a hand over the halt of the sword and looked at with Tails, managing to hide the surprised look on his face, “Whoa buddy! Could have knocked before barging in!”

Tails, however, seemed to be in quite the hurry, “Sonic! I'm picking up these really strange signals pretty close from here!” He took another look at the Miles Electric in his hand as he waved it in front of him, “I have no clue if it's Eggman attacking, but – are you talking to a sword?”

Sonic frowned. He was hoping that Tails wouldn't have noticed in his rushed entrance. He simply shrugged, “I dunno. Was I?”

“Huh?” Tails blinked a few times before shaking his head, laughing, “Funny Sonic, trying to make me question what I saw. I mean, I was wondering why I could hear voices from behind this door.”

“If it's any consolation, neither of us are crazy,” The blue hedgehog nodded, pointing at the sword, “I was talking to the sword.”

Tails gave a short laugh of disbelief, “I know I'm not crazy, but you? Talking to a sword?!”

“Is it really the craziest thing, considering everything else we've experienced?” Sonic questioned, with a small smirk.

“Sonic, you are aware that you admitted to talking to an inanimate object -”

“Please refrain from believing that King Arthur is losing his mind,” Caliburn spoke softly.

The two-tailed fox looked at the object in Sonic's hand and then back at Sonic, “Who's 'King Arthur'? More importantly... who just spoke?”

“Caliburn,” Sonic said, nodding to the sword and then shaking his head with disappointment, “But I have told him countless times to stop calling me that!”

“Wait... wait... wait...” Tails brought the Miles Electric up to his face, rapidly touching it through his research, “Hang on... no...”

“See, just like the time I told Amy, except she thought it was an excuse,” Sonic whispered to the sword with a shrug.

The blue hedgehog stood up, holding the sword in his right hand, and walked to the two-tailed kit, placing his left hand on Tails' shoulder, “Don't think about it too hard. Let's go and find out what's happened.”

Tails simply nodded, unable to speak.

“How much further?” Sonic asked the young kit in front of him, keeping a grip on Caliburn as they went.

“Just... a few metres!” Tails glanced back at Sonic and shook his head. Seeing him with a sword that could actually talk didn't really sink in very well. There was just something so outlandish about it, compared to the other things he'd seen. Well... it's not a gun.

Tails looked at the Miles Electric and quickly stopped, his feet scrapping through the grass and leaving dirt tracks in the soggy ground. He heard Sonic chuckle behind him.

“Here,” Sonic walked to him, holding out the sword to the two-tailed fox.

Tails took a hold of the sword and handed the Miles Electric to Sonic. The two-tailed fox had to hold the sword with both hands, but he did as gently as he could as if the sword was extremely fragile.

“So, you're the sword from the legend?” Tails muttered to the sword, still in slight disbelief, not exactly sure if the inanimate object would talk back or not.

“Yes, you are correct.”

“Not smart mouthing you, is he?” The blue hedgehog asked, his voice much further away.

Tails turned to his best friend and smiled as he walked up to where the signal was, “No, not at all. Just still a little surprised.”

“Don't be. Just think of it like it's a over-size talking letter opener,” Sonic's expression turned more serious as he looked around the area. He knelt down to the grass, noticing that there were burnt markings in the ground that looked oddly like footprints.

“Kinda looks like Shadow's hover shoe prints,” Tails commented, standing next to Sonic.

Sonic stood up and nodded, “Yeah. But even if he used Chaos Control, it shouldn't give off any signals like that,” He pointed to the Miles Electric and then looked around.

“King Arthur?”

The blue hedgehog and two-tailed fox stood up straight, looking for the source of the voice. It sounded familiar.

“I'm not usually called that,” Sonic spoke out and watched as an ebony hedgehog with red-streaks walked out from the trees surrounding the around, covered with heavy armour.

Tails rubbed his eyes, looking back from Sonic to the one that came unannounced, “Who-?”

The blue hedgehog looked at Tails and laughed, “You know, I thought you read the book. It's Lancelot.”

The two-tailed fox walked closer to Sonic and whispered, “Why does he look like Shadow?”

The ebony hedgehog held a sword out, directed at the young kit, believing the fox to be a threat, “Step away.”

“Calm down Lance, it's just my buddy Tails,” Sonic smiled to Tails, who just looked back at him with worry, holding Caliburn back to him.

“I don't know what to think here, Sonic,” Tails looked back from where they had come from, “First you tell me about a talking sword, then we find a knight and they keep calling you Arthur. I must be dreaming or something.”

“Well, that's kinda what I thought too,” Sonic explained, frowning slightly, “You can go back to the workshop I suppose, I think we've found out what has 'cause the commotion.”

“I usually would stay with you, but I'm gonna take your advice here,” Tails laughed nervously as he moved away, waving at Sonic, “I'll see you later. I'm probably just... gonna... work on something...” Tails jumped up into the air and flew away from the scene.
