•BACKSTORY• He was brought up by a wealthy family until his father died, leaving his mother and him in poverty. She worked many jobs to keep them both alive but still it wasn't enough. James was sent off to find work and became a Newsie. One evening he was walking back from his spot when he came across a skinny, starving girl begging for pennies or bread on the streets. He brought her back to the Brooklyn Newsies who taught her how to survive on the streets on her own. Rosa and him built up a brother-sister relationship until she moved to Manhattan.
