Chapter One
She listened him just for respect, her eyes staring at the ceiling and mind far away from the white room, repeating history, her history.
For a moment she went back to the times when her dad read her stories every night, and her mom hummed on the kitchen baking her birthday cake as each year. In a blink of an eye she was packing her stuff and moving to continue her studies as photographer, saying goodbyes to the people she loves and getting into her car with the feeling of miss all over her heart. Later on she started to feel a strange pain on a side of her stomach which she ignored for a long time, and now she's here, lying on a bed with her back against the cold sheets and blue eyes turning to look at the man talking and talking things she couldn't hear because she did not wanted to.
"I don't wanna be here" the words flew out of her mouth with such a calm tone as if nothing was going on. As simply as what she said.
The doctor's eyes widened and he stepped back with a look that you could tell he just saw a ghost. She stayed still, motionless and concentrating on her calm breathing.
"w-what?" he asked confused. With her blue eyes never leaving his, she slightly slid her hand to the other one and without asking for permission took off the bandage wrapped around her wrist. It hurt and she made a painful gesture but managed to get over it.
"I won't stay" she said being clear again and sat up. Her weak hands took out of her nose those tubes that have been giving her oxygen for months, carefully and pulling the blankets apart. He did not said a word but his hand tried to stop her a couple of times before her bare feet made contact with the cold ground, trembling and barely holding the weight of her weak and slim body.
"but you're on a treatment, it's impossible for you to-" the straight glance of her sparkly and exhausted blue eyes was enough strong to cut him off, even it made his heart stop for a second.
"Mr. Drake, you know I'm tired of this, of the same story everyone tells me over and over again everyday since I'm here" she said trying to keep calm, "you can continue telling me, as you did minutes before, about how this virus has contaminated my blood or how it eats the rest of my life, just be honest once... is it going to stop?"
These are the moments when honesty is a powerful word. Never in life being honest has been easy on this kind of situations or others, and it's common on the human being to lie in order to keep a fake peace or hide from trouble, but the true keeps spinning around trying to get in. There's always a moment to stop and be brave. It's better to bring the hard moments now than later or never, life is short to live with worry.
The simple word of two letters came out of his mouth. It made her remember her days at school, when her classmates sang letters to learn the alphabet. And we all mention this word in positive and negative things. Two letters, 'N' and 'O', that together are so common and strong.
She sat at the edge of the bed and looked down at her delicate hands nodding, of course she knew the answer of her silly and difficult question, it was pretty obvious from the beginning of all this. And now the little grain of hope she used to have has drown in darkness.
"I'm sorry" he murmured kneeling in front of her and placing both of his big hands on top of hers, "is there something I can do for you?"
"get me out of here" she said pleading, "I can't stand this lie, does everyone knows nothing will heal me?" he nodded slightly, "so why I am here? it's not contagious, and I want to enjoy the rest of my days, I have a bunch of ideas of trips and stuff" he looked at the floor and thought it for a minute.
"are you in peace with yourself?" he asked almost in a murmur with a croaky tone.
"until I get to be at home" he nodded again and stood up, taking his things and writing something on a paper. She just watched him, hoping for the best. Luckily, soon he walked back towards her and sat at her side.
"here, with this you can get free medicines to take away the pain temporary" he said handing her a small piece of paper, "and on the other side you have my number and some ideas of mine, you know, my brother rents yachts so you can visit a beautiful island" he said.
Her smile was so big and bright that could light up the whole gray room just as her tiny tears of joy touched his heart. The emotion was to much that she couldn't contain to wrap her long weak arms around him, hugging him tight while he laughed. It wasn't as hugging a stranger, Dr. Drake has been at her side since the first diagnostic and has spend long hours with her when she needed to talk to someone, he was like another friend to her.
"thank you so much" she murmured pulling away.
"whenever darling" he smiled, "promise me something" she nodded without hesitation.
"enjoy as much as you can, you have taught me strength and love for life" he said with tiny tears forming on his brown eyes, "I'm sure you'll do great things, and much more than a normal person can do" she hugged him again nodding.
"I promise" she smiled, "how much time do I have?" she asked, not caring if the answer was an hour or a day as long as she could smile once again.
"just 13 days... your lucky number" he said trying to sound funny but failed.
"those will be unforgettable days" she said believing every single word.
"sure" he smiled and wrapped an arm around her to help her get out of what at first turned into a jail and finally into the doors of heaven.
