Told you it was an absolute monster, didn't we? Just goes to show that Science Fiction is a globally loved genre, and it's definitely one that we here at TK are both proud and honoured to be at the forefront of, in Wattpad terms at any rate!

A massive thank you to all involved in any capacity be it as a writer or translator, but most of all thank you to each and every one of you who took the time to read this ruddy epic issue.

I think it's fair to say we've just kickstarted TK's 2018 with a damn big bang!

Speaking of 2018, this is what we've all got to look forward to over the course of the next few months!

March 4th - Return to First Contact

First contact is a common science-fictional theme about the first meeting between humans and aliens, or, more broadly, of any sentient race's first encounter with another one.

April 1st - OceanPunk

An 'Adventure-Friendly World,' which, no matter how 'Technology Marches On,' remains firmly rooted in the cultural and political sensibilities of the age of 'Wooden Ships and Iron Men.' Many works of modern fantasy or speculative fiction are set in a mostly watery world with distant islands connected by trade routes, ships sailing back and forth, and mighty colonial nations vying for rulership of the oceans and seas. May contain Organic Technology, and have a large focus on what happens under the waves as well as over. Fantastic elements based on old sailors' superstitions (mermaids, abandoned derelicts that often aren't so abandoned after all, giant sea monsters) also make a frequent appearance. This may also be a type of 'After the End setting.'

And of course it should go without saying, OceanPunk and PiratePunk share certain, obvious similarities!

May 4th - May the Fourth Be With You - Star Wars/Space Opera Special

Space opera is a subgenre of science fiction that emphasizes romantic, often melodramatic adventure, set mainly or entirely in outer space, generally involving conflict between opponents possessing advanced technologies and abilities. +

Perhaps the most significant trait of space opera is that settings, characters, battles, powers, and themes tend to be very large-scale.

Sometimes the term space opera is used pejoratively to denote bad quality science fiction, but its meaning can differ, often describing a particular science fiction genre without any value judgement.

June 3rd - BonePunk

This one features exactly what it sounds like it features... Bone-based technology!

July 1st - Colonisation

Colonisation is the act where life forms move into a distant area where their kind is sparse or not yet existing at all and set up new settlements in the area. Colonisation applies to all life forms in a sense though it is most often used in reference to insects and humans. Insect colonisation varies from species to species though it most often involves a queen setting out from its parent colony and establishing a colony of her own at a suitable location.

Human colonisation is not to be confused with colonialism or imperialism, as colonisation is a broader category, encompassing all large-scale immigrations of an established population to a 'new' location, and expansion of their civilisation into this area. This process may or may not victimise an indigenous population (depending first on whether there is any indigenous population to victimise).

August 5th - The Anti-Hero Special

Science fiction and popular culture are rife with antihero characters. This issue is (or will be) TK's homage to such creations.

September 2nd - SpacePunk

Space is an ocean! Treat it as such!

In Spacepunk stories, the tools of the punk genre are combined with the themes of a Swords and Space tale. Here, a seemingly older civilization with advanced Space Age technology.

These stories have also been referred to simply as "Sword and Space" fantasy when dealing with an ancient civilization with advanced technology or "Retrofuturism" when the society is a modern society with advanced technology.

Star Wars is probably the most complete and well known example of this particular sub-genre.

October 7th - Final Contact

A sort of reverse to first contact, final contact details events surrounding one species' final contact with another.

November 11th - Remembrance Day Special: Military Science Fiction

Military Science Fiction is where a science-fiction story is based around military characters in a warfare setting. Primarily military science fiction uses the opportunities of advanced technology and radically different combat environments to explore how they affect the characters and how different warfare could be from what is experienced in the present day. Military Science Fiction usually focuses on aspects such as honour, duty and sacrifice yet others also explore the horrors and futility of warfare. Common hall-marks of military science fiction are space battles involving fleets of space-craft, faster-than-light travel and energy weapons such as lasers. It is not uncommon for military science fiction to cross over into other genres, such as the epic scope of science-fiction opera or the use of alternate futures.
