Flitz sped out of the parking lot, and you quickly realized why they make fun of his driving. He made a sharp turn, quickly flinging you against the side of the car as the others squished into you. Mari began to laugh, "hold on tight, there's a handle above your left hand."
You quickly grabbed on as Flitz turned another corner. You checked behind you, noting that you had two police cars on your tail. Flitz turned to the left again, flinging Wes against you. "Why are you so big? And why do we only turn this way?"
The group laughed. You checked behind your shoulder once again, noticing that Flitz had lost one of the cops. A few minutes, side roads, and uncomfortable turns later, the van had escaped. Flitz's driving became less reckless as you pulled up to what looked like a small ranch.
While you were wondering why the group was there, Wes hopped out of the car and grabbed the painting. Walking up to the door, he set it down, rang the door bell, and left. Flitz drove the van to a hidden side street, and the group watched as the poor farmer picked up his painting. He looked close to tears.
As Flitz drove away, Mari spoke once again. "And this is why we do this."
The drive back to base was pretty calm and uneventful. The group seemed exhausted, slowly coming down from their adrenaline high. Mari had actually fallen asleep, and it looked like a few others were about to as well. Once you arrived back at the cafe, you watched as Sohinki carried Mari bridal style to their room. They really were a sweet couple.
Wes had fallen asleep on your shoulder, so you gently shook him awake when you arrived. "Hey, we're back," you murmured softly, trying not to disturb the sleeping giant. He groggily stood up and got out of the car.
The entire group slowly trudged into the building and to their respective rooms. Boze and Damien were already inside. You crawled into bed next to Boze, too tired to even change your clothes as the events of these past two days suddenly caught up with you. You quickly fell into the murky darkness of sleep.
When you woke up the next morning, Boze was not next to you. She seemed to wake up pretty early. You checked the clock, noticing that it was only 7 AM. You took a quick shower and headed downstairs, deciding to see who was up. Downstairs, you noticed that only Flitz and Mari were there, working behind the counter. You had forgotten that the cafe is actually open most of the time.
You nodded to the two of them. The cafe was relatively quiet due to the time of the morning, so Mari came over with a cup of coffee for you. "I'm guessing Boze is at her range, Damien is at the station, and everyone else is asleep?" You asked.
Mari laughed. "Yeah, that's usually how it is after a late night. Where are you going?" She had motioned to your athletic gear.
You smiled, "I figured that if I was going to do this I should at least be a little physically fit, just in case."
Mari didn't seem to like the idea, but she relented, knowing how stubborn you could be. "Alright, but just in case."
You finished your cup of coffee and stood up. "I'm going to go out for a run, call me if you need me." You were surprised that both Mari and Flitz let you go without any questions, but it was a pleasant surprise. It seemed like the group actually trusted you. You put your headphones in, and began to jog around the area.
However, what you didn't tell them was that you weren't only going for a run. You jogged a quick 3 miles to the nearest martial arts dojo. If you were getting into this, you were going to be able to protect yourself and maybe some of the others. You started with some quick self defense, learning basic moves as it was your first time learning this.
