Chapter ~6~

Peeta POV

I wake up and get ready for school on Monday. I wear jeans and an old T-shirt. I slip my coat on and wait for Katniss. We've always walked together to and from school, even before we started dating. I look at my watch and see Katniss is already ten minutes late and I'm going to be late to school if I don't run. I frown at my phone when I see that she hasn't texted or called me. She always tells me if she isn't going to be walking with me. I am very worried about her as I sprint to school. I get there with about five minutes to spare. I find Finnick and Annie and say "Do either of you know where Katniss is?" They both say no and Annie looks upset. She says "She never does this. She always tells me if she's not going to be here." I try to keep it together but I'm freaking out inside. I know that something has happened to Katniss. I can feel it. We go to our classes and at lunch I go to the office. I find the principal, Seneca Crane, and say "Do you know where Katniss Everdeen is?" He frowns and says "What relation are you to her?" I tell him "I'm her boyfriend. I'm really worried she's not at school and-" He cuts me off by saying "Peeta, I'm so sorry." I can already feel tears pricking my eyes. I say "Why? What's happened to her?" He says "I'm so sorry, but I am not allowed to tell you.". I turn and run out of the school. What could have happened to her? Just yesterday her soft lips were on mine. I run to my house and burst through the doors. I take off my coat and shoes and go into the bakery to find my dad. I see him and Nick kneading bread. I say "Dad something has happened to Katniss. She wasn't at school and nobody knew where she was so I went and asked the principal and he said he couldn't tell me but he kept saying he was sorry." My dad says "Call her sister, Prim. She might know." I dial Prim's phone number that Katniss gave me. Prim answers in a squeaky voice. She says "Peeta come quick!" and then starts sobbing. I say "Prim! Prim what is going on!" She says "It's Katniss. She had a fight with mom and then she ran away and they found her in the woods. Gale Hawthorne was hunting am he found her collapsed so he brought her to the hospital and then called us. Peeta, she's in a coma. She might never wake up!" I feel my heart stop. No. Katniss can't be in a coma. I shout out "No! NO! I'm coming to the hospital right now Prim!" I stuff my phone in my pocket and sprint out the door. I didn't stop to put on my coat or shoes. I just run as fast as I can. By the time I get to the hospital my feet are throbbing and I am freezing, but I do not care. I say "Where is Katniss Everdeen?!?" The lady at the front desk says "She is in room 465. Are you family?" I don't hesitate before saying "Yes." She says "I'll take you up there." We get to the door soon and the lady knocks. Prim opens it and says "Peeta!" She pulls me inside with her. What I see makes me die inside. Katniss is laying in a bed with tubes all around her and an oxygen mask on. I feel my knees giving out as I collapse on the floor. I curl up in a ball and just sob. I feel Prim rubbing my back and I slowly stand back up. Tears stream down my face as I sit in a chair next to Katniss and I take her hand in both of mine. I look up for the first time and see Plutarch sitting in the room. He says "I'm so sorry Peeta." I can't say anything. A doctor comes in and sees me with Katniss. He says "Hello I'm doctor Betee. Im geussing that you are Katniss's husband?" I blush a little and say "Boyfriend." He frowns and says "I'm sorry son but it's family only." Prim says "He can stay. He basically is family." The doctor nods and then checks all the beeping machines next to Katniss. I take out my phone and I have a ton of texts and missed calls. I call my dad and tell him everything. Then I text Finnick and tell him to tell the whole group. Soon it's nighttime and Plutarch takes Prim home. I just sit in my chair with Katniss. I cannot believe this happened. I still don't really know how this all happened. Tears fall from my eyes as I gently kiss her forehead. I sit in my chair and stay up all night. I couldn't sleep if I tried. The girl that I am head over heels in love with might never wake up again. No, I can't think like that. She has to wake up. If she dies, I'd have nothing. Sure I would have my dad and brothers, and my other friends, but I need Katniss. I break down and start weeping again. A nurse comes in but I don't care. She puts her hand on my shoulder and says "I'm sorry." I look up at her and say "It's not your fault. I just... she might not wake up!" I can't help the tears that pour out of my eyes. The nurse checks all of the machines hooked to Katniss. She says "I'm sure she'll wake up. I'm going to go get you a drink. Do you want any food?" I say "I'm not hungry." She leave and returns with a glass of water. She says "You should really drink some or else you'll get dehydrated." I nod and try to stand up to get the cup. My feet are swollen and raw from running here barefoot. I hold back a scream as I sit back down. The nurse rushes over and says "What's wrong?" I say "My feet. When I found out Kat was here in a coma I just ran out of the house without my coat or shoes. I ran all the way here and now my feet are all swollen and raw." She bends down and looks at them. She says "They are really bad. I'm going to get something to soak them in and then we'll have to put medicine on them and wrap them up." I nod as she hurries off to get all the stuff. She comes back with a tub full of stuff for me to soak my feet in. When I dip them in it stings and burns. I wince as she says "I'm sorry Peeta. We have to get all the dirt and bacteria out though. It could get infected and if the infection spread it would be bad." I nod and then sit and wait. The nurse says "By the way I'm Delly." I say "Thank you for helping me and Katniss." She smiles and says "You really love her." I smile for the first time since I found out about Katniss. I say "Yeah." Delly takes one of my feet and drys it off. She puts a bunch if medicine on it and then bandages it up. She does the same to the other foot and says "I'll go get you a wheel chair. " She leaves and then Dr. Betee comes in. He says "We are going to be moving Katniss to a room where family and friends can visit." I say "Okay." Delly comes back in and they get me in the wheel chair. They push me down the hallway right next to her so I hold her hand the whole way. They take us into a new room and once they check all of Katniss's machines again they leave. I whisper "Katniss I know that you probably can't hear me, but I wanted to tell you that I love you. Please come back Katniss. Please don't leave me." I hear a knock on the door and then Prim comes in with Plutarch. Prim gives me a hug and says "She'll wake up. She has to wake up." I say "What... what happened?" Prim sits down and says "Our mom and Katniss got into a fight. About our dad and how mom left us. Katniss yelled at her and then my mom slapped her. Katniss ran out of the house. She ran to the woods and she fell and hit her head really hard on a boulder. Gale Hawthorne found her while he was hunting. He carried her to the hospital and then they called us. You know what happened from there." I say "Where's your mom?" Prim glares down at the floor and says "She's at the house moping. I hate her." I'm taken by surprise. Prim has never been anything but sweet, now though, she is fierce and very angry. She calms down and says "Why are you in a wheelchair?" I say "I ran out of the house without putting my coat or shoes on. I ran all the way here and really tore up my feet." Prim giggles and says "Wow Peeta!" I say "What? The girl I am madly in love with is in a coma. I wasn't thinking." Prim smiles and says "You're such a romantic." I chuckle and say "Not really." We hear another knock and my dad and brothers barge in. My dad says "Oh my God. What happened?" Prim explains as Nick comes over to me and says "I am so sorry Peeta." I just nod as Toby hugs me. I feel empty inside without Katniss. My family leaves soon and then our group rushes in. Finnick says "What the Hell happened?" When Annie sees Katniss sobs shake her shoulders. She turns and clings to Finnick. Even insensitive Johanna cries. We hear the door open and Gale comes in with his little brother Rory. Rory runs to Prim and she collapses in his arms. Gale awkwardly walks up to where I'm sitting. I say "Thank you for finding her and bringing her here." He nods and says "I'm so sorry I was such an asshole." I nod and don't say anything. I can't forgive him. He leaves and says he'll wait in the car for Rory. Prim had been sobbing in his arms for a long time. She is strong but she still breaks down. Finnick says "Peeta, I know that this is the stupidest thing I could say but I'm sorry. " I just nod and look over at Katniss. She is beautiful, so beautiful.

Katniss POV

I have been in a coma for a week now. I can see and hear everything. It is absolute torture. Seeing my friends and family in such pain. And Peeta. He has barely left my side. He is in a wheelchair because he ran here barefoot. He has been sobbing and crying and begging me to come back. But my body wont wake up. I hate it.

Peeta POV

It has been two whole weeks. I've barely left Kat's side. Finnick brings me all my work from school. I barely eat or drink. All I can think about is Katniss. She might not wake up. My feet are healed now so I pace around the room as the Dr. Betee checks all the machines. When he's done he says "Peeta if she doesn't wake up in the next day we are going to have to turn her life support off. I do not agree with this policy but I have no choice." No. They can't do that! He leaves and I collapse on the floor. I curl up in a ball and sob.

Katniss POV

Peeta is in such pain. Dr. Betee just told him they were going to have to turn my life support off if I don't wake up tomorrow. Once sobs stop shaking his shoulders he stands up and walks over to me. He brushes the hair off my forehead and then kisses me. I want to kiss him back. I need to kiss him back. Suddenly I feel a sharp sensation and I am back in my body. I am awake! Peeta has already pulled back and walked away, sobs shaking his shoulders again. I try to shout out to him but all I can manage is to whimper "Peeta." His head whips around and then he sprints over to me. He says "Katniss! Oh my God you're awake! I thought you were going to die! Oh thank God you're okay!" I lightly smile and squeak out "I love you." Tears are streaming down his face as he says "I love you too Katniss! So, so, so much!" He kisses me and I try to kiss back but I'm weak. He says "I'm going to go get the doctor." He runs out and returns a minute later with Dr. Betee. Peeta says "She's awake! See she's awake!" Betee smiles and says "I'm so glad. I hate that rule about having to turn life support off after two weeks. I'm going to get you unhooked from all those machines." I say "Peeta, please call Prim." He says "Of course." He calls Prim, his dad, and Finnick, even though it's three o'clock in the morning. Soon Dr. Betee is done and I only have one IV left in me. He leaves and Peeta walks over to my side. I say "Will you get in bed with me?" He says "Of course." I scoot over and he gets in next to me. He holds me in his arms and it feels so right. I feel tears slipping down my face as I say "Peeta, when I was in a coma I could hear and see everything. I am so sorry for leaving you." He says "Don't be sorry Katniss. It's fine. You're okay now and that's all that matters." I say "You are too good." He just smiles and leans his forehead against mine. His eyes close and he quickly falls asleep. I lightly kiss him before falling asleep too.
