Pursuit 1: The Greatest Invention of All Time
Three months ago
"Mom, did you really love dad?" I asked the brunette who I call my mom. She looked at me like I grew a second head which was not impossible today considering all the experiments and such.
"Why would you ask that Madison?" She counter-asked. I hate it when peope answer a question with another question.
"You know, just asking. But nevermind," I asnwered, shaking my head. Why the question? She wouldn't have married my dad if she didn't.
I was about to go to my room when she called me.
"Come here. I wanna tell you something," she said, patting the seat beside her.
"I'm gonna tell you a story." I can tell this would be good. My mom has always been a good storyteller. She used to tell me stories about her teenage life.
"I do love your dad and I still love him even if he has passed away for seven years now." My dad passed away because of cancer. Unfortunately, until now, year 2041, there was still no cure 'cure' for cancer although they had some acceptable experiments.
"Has it always been you and dad? Were you like high school sweethearts or something?" I asked, full of curiosity.
She shook her head no. "Well, before your dad, I loved another guy. We were friends since we were in fifth grade."
"And does this guy have a name?" I asked. Excuse my impatience. Don't tell anyone but my spirit animal's a lion (rawr).
"His name's Lawrence. We were your age when we went to university together, Westbrook University. After a year we broke it off and afterwards I met your dad," she trailed. Hm, of all the stories mom has told me, I never heard this. Who is this Lawrence?
"He was your true love, wasnt he?" Ugh. I hate my mouth. It talks without me instructing it.
"What makes you say that, Madi?" Here we go again with the answering-my-question-with-another-question. I rolled my eyes internally (like what you're doing now because I'm utterly confusing when it comes to references. I mean how do you even roll your eyes internally? You don't.)
"It's just that, um, you never seemed 'that' in love with dad," I said hesitantly. I'm not usually a vocal judgementerer. Especially not to my mom.
Growing up, I realized that my dad wasn't really my mom's true love. Although they did love each other (sortakindanotreally), it just didn't seem right.
My mom didn't have that sparkle in her eyes when she looks at dad. But how would I know? I'm just a nineteen year old in search of nothing but the truth.
Dad, I have nothing against you. Please don't haunt me. I just wish my mom could've been happier and been with the man he truly loved. Again, no offense.
"I'll admit, Lawrence's my great love but I chose your father. Sometimes, life's just like that. We broke up because we were going at different paths and that's okay," she admitted and reassured me with a smile.
Yet deep down, I felt her sadness. My mom deserved to be happy and maybe, just maybe, she still has the chance to be.
"Where's he now?" I asked.
"I haven't really heard much of him. I haven't even seen him for a very long time now. I last saw him last 2017 which was almost 25 years ago," she answered getting up.
"Mom, if you had the chance, would you wish to change the past though?" I asked her.
She smiled at me. "Of course not. All of this was meant to happen." She then patted my head like Daisy, our robotic dog.
Present day
I heard a lot of Oooooh's from people around me. We were currently at a tech company which bombarded us with 'extraordinary' stuff.
This company is the most successful technology manufacturer in the country. All the best inventions are to be found here.
The uni sponsored this activity today. Something about making the future great. Don't you mean greater? We're already living in the damn future. But there's always room for improvement, I guess.
"Look at those," my friend, Arden, said. She was pointing at a man with a prototype in his head.
A lot of cool stuff was here. We passed by a frog opera awhile ago. A specific species of frogs have been proven to have vocal chords and thanks to experiments, they were actually able to sing. I'm actually kind of jealous. Just kind of.
"Wait, I'm gonna take a look at something first," I told her and went to look at some octopuses juggling some balls of assorted colors. See, this is the damn future.
"Yeah. I'm gonna go check on it. Of course, it's the greatest invention of all time. Hm. Yeah, okay..." I overheard a man dressed in a black suit say. Wait, didn't he say he was gonna check on the greatest invention of all time? What could it be?
He started walking away and I am, as I said, just a curious nineteen year old who is in search of nothing but the truth so I followed him. Not before sparing a look at Arden who's still busy looking at some convention. This'll be quick.
I was a few feet away from the man who was leading me to a secluded area. The area would be dark if not for the green lights illuminated by the bulbs.
I stopped to a halt and hid in the corner when a door opened and another man came into view. Hm, what are they talking and nodding about? The second guy opened the door wider and the first guy peeked at something.
Why can't I hear them? The last time I recalled, I had good hearing. What was happening to my body? First, my blabber mouth and then my deafening ears? What's next, my garbage-smelling-only nose? Okay, maybe I'm overreacting.
They started walking again, back to the convention so I flattened my body on the wall, in hope of camouflage.
They walked past me and I released a breath of relief. Phew.
I walked feather-light steps which I just realized is unnecessary since my shoes were created to release no friction or any sound at all.
I stared at the door in front of me. Does this door lead to the greatest invention of all time or should I have followed the two men instead? But they were looking at something and that's a good enough reason for me to open this door.
But what if there are people inside? They would surely reprimand me.
I opened the door a little. Just a little. Enough for my eyes to scan around. Hm, why didn't they lock this door anyway. Well, serves more for me.
Seeing no one else was around, I stepped inside. The room was white. Not to promote racism since that issue has been resolved.
Somewhere in the um, Northwest direction, was a thing inside a glass. Forgive me, I was never good with the Cartesian Coordinate System so I had to give you a vague and nonspecific location.
I walked closer to the aforementioned 'thing in the glass' and oh my glob, it couldn't possibly be.
