The Truth

Narcissa Malfoy, 3rd person POV

Narcissa had always loved Carina. She wanted to treat her like her own daughter. But Lucius had never even approved of her taking the girl. She would have taken Harry, but there is no way to hide something like that. With Carina, she could just pass her off as an anomaly.

So she did not approve of her husband telling her daughter the truth. But what was she to do? Draco looked confused. Oh God, why didn't she tell him? She should have told him. Lucius was talking. He was telling her precious girl everything. She couldn't focus on his words. She was lost in her own thoughts.

Does she remember how much I spoiled her when she was younger?

Does she know it is me and not Dobby who brings her dinner when Lucius says she can't have any?

Does she know how bad it hurts me to hurt her? Does she know worse will happen if I don't?

Narcissa finally tuned into the conversation Lucius was speaking, "The truth is, you aren't our daughter. Your real parents are-"

Narcissa cut in. "Dead. Your real parents are dead," Lucius glared at her, but she continued, "We don't know who they are. A pureblood and a muggle-born." Lucius said nothing. Draco sat there, his mouth agape. Carina looked confused. She didn't speak for a while. When she did, she asked a very reasonable question.

"Couldn't we use magic? Shouldn't I have some memory somewhere of them?" Narcissa stuttered.

"It-it doesn't work like, it doesn't work like that!" Carina looked up at her. She opened her mouth but Dumbledore stepped forward.

"Carina, I think it is time for you to head to bed. Your parent and I need to talk." Carina nodded. "Draco too."

Carina Malfoy/Evangeline Potter 3rd person POV

Carina and Draco stepped out into the hallway. They looked everywhere but each other.

Finally, Draco spoke. "Your disguise is wearing off." Carina looked down at her self. Her tan skin covered in freckles and her waist-length red hair was slowing fading back into view.

"Shoot. Do you think you could...?" She looked up at him hopefully.

"I'm still your brother, aren't I?"

"Yeah. It's just so awkward. I don't know. I mean, we've always been so close. The earliest memories I have are of you."

"Yeah." The awkward silence returned. Abruptly, Draco pulled out his wand. He waved it at her and her disguise started to return.

"Wait!" Carina suddenly yelled. Draco dropped his wand in surprise and it rolled down the stairs.

"Damn," Draco said under his breath. "What the hell are you doing?"

"I-I want to keep looking like this. I-I don't want to be forced to pretend to be a true Malfoy if I'm not even a Malfoy." Draco nodded. "And, uh, why did you want me to talk to Harry?" Draco looked surprised.

"Didn't he tell you about the nightmares?" Carina shook her head slowly. "Damn Potter. Can't be trusted with anything. He has nightmares like you. Green light, screaming. But for him, there's a flying motorcycle. Didn't you notice how weird mom was acting? They think we're stupid. You and Harry have the same nightmare. You look like Lily Potter, You're adopted. You're Evangeline Potter." Carina swallowed. She had known ever since her mom said she was adopted. Harry's description of his sister, her being adopted, it all made sense. And Draco's new information about the nightmares...

"I-I'm going to bed." Carina started down the stairs. Draco nodded. He didn't say anything. He knew Carina needed her quiet. He just grabbed her arm and led her down the stairs. They made their way through he now quiet castle. He stopped in front of the Hufflepuff common room. Then he spoke again.

"What do you want me to call you?" Carina looked up at him. She licked her lips.

"I-I think that, that I want to be called... I want to be called Angel." Draco nodded.

"Okay, C-Angel. Angel." Carina smiled at him. Then she ducked in the Hufflepuff common room.
