Around lunchtime they stopped in a quaint little town to get some food. There was a simple diner at the end of the street, they each got a burger and fries with some juice to wash it down. While they waited for their food Sean decided to go get a phone charger for Vera.
"Hey, can I see your phone for a sec?"
"Uhm... ok she shuffled through her small purse looking for it. "It's no good though. The battery died a long time, even before I left the movie house yesterday" she shrugged placing it in his outstretched hand. He looked at it and handed it back to her.
"I'll be back sweetheart." he said as he stood to walk towards the diner entrance.
"Hold on." she called before he left "can I borrow your phone?" she asked. "It's just that I haven't spoken to any of my family. I know you speak to Keera and she knows I'm fine, but I just need to speak to her." She said nervously.
He tossed it to her before turning around and heading towards the door once more. She dialled her sisters number as he walked out, as the call went through it was immediately sent to voicemail. She huffed in frustration, but left a message after she heard the beep. It was a short message as she told her sister she was safe and would talk to her when she got the chance to charge her phone. She hung up and looked out the window while she waited for Sean and the food. He returned five minutes later with a small package which he gave her. Inside there was a box with a charging set, there was a socket charger; a car charger; a power bank; and a few cables compatible with other devices too.
"Oh, my goodness. Thanks Sean. Oh thank you so much." She whispered, clapping her hands like an excited little child. He didn't have to buy her anything. As far as favors went, he had done enough for her.
Sean just offered her a small smile surprised by how grateful she could be of something so simple. She squeezed his hand gratefully just as their waitress brought their food. They ate their meal in silence and resumed their journey soon after. As soon as they entered the car Vera plugged in her phone, smiling triumphantly as the screen lit up signalling that it is charging. Sean was back to driving like a mad man, but it wasn't scary actually. It was just noticeable as trees whizzed past them. He drove for the next ten hours nonstop, well except for the one or two fuel stops they made. They randomly conversed as he drove. She would doze off occasionally, and she even napped for an hour at some point in the evening. They had covered a little over two thousand kilometers since they left Hodge when Vera realized how tired Sean must be. It however took tons of convincing and begging for Sean to finally call it a night. He relented, agreeing only to drive into the next city looking for a suitable place to spend the night.
With this in mind they drove into the city of Celestine. It is an academic hub, bigger and more advanced than Hodge. Ranked as one of the most important cities in the whole country, it was a coincidence that it was somewhat in the center of the country. Its size rivaled that of Catharses, Catharses being the second city after the capital, thanks to the new trade center and the pier. Most of the reputable universities and colleges in the country had a campus in Celestine. It also had the best observatory in the country followed by the capital. Vera would know that as it was a lifelong dream for her to just have a moment in the renowned Universal View Observatory. She heard that the experience is indelible. Apparently, the place transports you into space, bringing the stars to your fingertips. Well one day she'll see it for herself, she sighed as she thought of how great that would be.
