Amara was born in Greece sometime during the first century B.C.E. She is the oldest known member of the Petrova bloodline, and was the world's very first immortal woman.

Amara was the personal handmaiden of Quetsiyah, a very powerful witch who was engaged to Silas. Amara and Silas fell deeply in love, becoming each other's true love. But their love was forbidden, because Silas was engaged to Quetsiyah, and Amara was a servant while Silas was a wealthy nobleman.

Because he wanted them to be together forever, Silas tricked Quetsiyah into creating the immortality spell by telling her he wanted to be with her for eternity. On the night they were to marry, Silas took the elixir and drank it with Amara. When Quetsiyah discovered this, she desiccated Amara to fake her death.

After desiccating Amara, Quetsiyah made her the physical anchor to the Other Side, binding its existence to her life. After Quetsiyah was murdered by the Travelers, they took possession of Amara's body and moved it around very often over two thousand years to be sure it would never fall into the wrong hands. During this time, she was forced to feel the deaths of every supernatural being who crossed over to the Other Side, and it slowly began to drive her insane.

Amara met her end during season five of The Vampire Diaries, when, after asking Silas to kill her, Silas was murdered by Stefan Salvatore. Seeing Silas' dead body, Amara stabbed herself, and died.
