Ages 10 and up.
Ben absolutely loved anything that contained sugar, and Halloween was no exception. This Halloween was especially important though, because he and his friends had invited the new kid who was transferring to his school and he wanted to make a good impression. Ben walked up to the sidewalk in front of his house and only minutes later his friends arrived. Ben could see that Luke and Kyle had made it, but there was still no sign of the new kid.
"Mabeye he couldn't come 'cause his parents wanted him to prepare for school." Kyle suggested.
"Not on Halloween!" Luke scoffed, giving Kyle a shove. Before the boys could continue arguing, they spotted the new kid running towards them with his pumpkin shaped mask over his face already.
"Sorry I was late," he said, his voice not even slightly muffled by the mask, "my parents wanted me to pack up my backpack before joining you guys."
"See!" Kyle exclaimed, smirking at Luke. Luke turned away, rolling his eyes. The boys grabbed their trick or treat bags and headed toward the first home on the street. Ben had planned to stop at every single house in five different neighborhoods, but by the time they had finished Ben's neighborhood, the group was exhausted.
"I think I'm going to head home." Luke murmured tiredly.
"Same." Kyle yawned. Ben said goodbye to his friends and stopped at a few more houses with the new kid. The whole time that they had been trick or treating, the kid had never spoken.
"Sooo," Ben began as they crossed the street, "you excited to start school?" The boy shrugged, but didn't answer. Suddenly, blaring headlights blinded Ben's eyes as a car came hurtling towards them. Ben jumped out of the way just in time, but the boy wasn't so lucky.
The car hit him so hard that he went flying through the air and landed almost fifteen feet from where he had just stood. Ben sprinted over to the motionless body. He kneeled over the boy and tried to pry the mask off of the boys face, but it wouldn't budge. Then, the eyes of the pumpkin mask started to glow, and the smile turned into a wide grin. Vines appeared and snatched at Ben's face. Before he could react, the mask was pressed against his face and the body of the kid who had just been hit turned to ash. And Ben knew no more.THE END.
