Oh yeah that.
I take the paper proffered to me and look at it, although I know what Jeet is talking about. It is the introduction I wrote of Mr. Vicky Grewal, our soon to be CEO.
I am not sure if it will be included in the press kit, but I decided to keep some information handy, if the higher ups decide to include his profile.
I kept it aside, as I wanted to run it by Nivedita before I add it in the kit.
It is very basic information, since I sourced most of the information from the internet and even most of that was from our company website. He went to one of the most prestigious schools in Mumbai and graduated with a double master's degree, in Electrical Engineering & Computer Science from MIT. He also got a Business Administration degree and International Relations Certificate from Harvard.
After his graduation, he moved to New York where he worked for a few years with 2 of the biggest companies in the world; one in finance and the other in retail industry. He then started the New York office of DeGlobal Corporation 2 years ago, making it one of the fastest growing businesses in the country.
But none of the websites I searched, have a recent picture of him. Like Purvi mentioned the other day, all there was, was an old picture of him as a child with his family and two siblings.
He either has no social media account or has kept it private, as there is nothing that I could find.
"That is Mr. Vicky Grewal's bio. I just kept it in case the big bosses want to put his profile in the press kit since he is to be our new CEO."
"Seems like you have been doing quite some research on him. Any particular reason for such interest?" Jeet sounds positively annoyed.
What is his problem?
His good mood from a few minutes ago seems to have vanished. Whatever! I really can't keep up with his weird mood swings.
"Look, I was trying to be proactive here," I defend a bit too aggressively. "It's not like I am stalking him or something, I am just putting together information of our new boss if the management decides to add in the press kit. I don't want to be rushed at the last minute looking up for information," I state, sounding miffed.
I don't understand why Jeet is affecting my mood this much. Usually I care a damn what others think. But somehow, I feel the need to clarify myself to him.
Jeet's face softens, guilt written over his face, "Sorry, I did not mean to sound rude. It just that I thought..." he stops mid-sentence and waves his hand in the air as if brushing away the words he was about to say.
"You know what? Forget it! I am sorry, you were just doing your job," he gives a small, curt smile.
"It's okay. Let's go to the canteen, I am hungry, aren't you?" I am in no mood to argue anyway.
Jeet nods in agreement and we head to the canteen. I have my tiffin with me, the extra food that I cooked last night.
By the time we reach our table, everyone except for Kavita, the slow eater in our group, has finished their lunch.
"There you are," Purvi exclaims.
"What took you guys so long? We thought you might be skipping lunch today," Khushboo chimes in.
"Yeah we had to finish the press kit job, you know we are running short of time and there's so much to do," I reply, taking a seat.
Everyone nods in agreement murmuring about their deadlines.
I whip out my tiffin while Jeet goes to get us plates and cutlery.
"Hey, I didn't know you got lunch from home today," Purvi exclaims. "What did you get?"
I open the lid of the first box letting the aroma waft around the table.
"I got matar paneer and bhindi masala," I said removing each container from its stack and display the contents, "and I got extra for all."
"That's not fair," Purvi protests, "you know I love the food you cook, and you did not even tell me, that you got lunch today. I would not have stuffed myself so much." Junaid and Kavita also nod in agreement.
"I never say no to delicious food," Rohit says, lurching forward to grab the boxes and helping himself to the vegetable and paneer.
Jeet returns with our plates, looking surprised at the gang bickering with one another over my tiffin.
"What's up?" he asks Junaid, waving his hand around towards the people at the table.
Purvi, the ever talkative chatterbox, cuts in before Junaid can say a word.
"Tarana got lunch and didn't tell us," she pouts. "Not fair Taru!" she adds glaring at me.
I smile and shrug. "I wanted to surprise you. I did not expect to get caught up with work. Next time I get lunch from home, I promise I will tell you first thing in the morning." I assure her.
"Yeah you better!" she points at me, "in fact, I will keep your tiffin with me, so that even if you can't come, we get to have your lunch," she adds, making everyone at the table laugh, except for Jeet who gives a small forced smile.
Everyone gets up to leave, including Rohit who polished off 3 chapatis with the vegetables.
"Hey guys, why are you leaving, there's still another 15 minutes for lunch break to end," I complain.
"Sorry yaar, but Kavita wants to go pick up some groceries from the supermarket, and the girls are all accompanying her as we also have some stuff to get. The boys want to catch up on the India vs Sri Lanka match," Khushboo says. "Do you want anything from the supermarket?" she asks helpfully.
I shake my head in negative, "Thanks, I'm good."
Jeet takes a tiny portion of the bhindi masala and a small amount of matar paneer for himself.
"Wow this is amazing," he exclaims as he quickly finishes the food from his plate.
I push the containers towards him.
"I don't like okra so I avoid it, but this is really good," Jeet says between swallowing his morsel. "You must give me the recipe to try out."
"You cook?" I ask in surprise.
"Yes. I sometimes dabble in cooking, whenever I get the time, it is a great stress reliever." Jeet is wolfing down the food pretty quickly.
"Why are you stressed?" the words escape my mouth before I could stop it.
Jeet looks taken aback for a moment, but quickly composes himself.
"You know um... life, family, new job, new place, the usual," he looks down quickly and concentrates on his meal, signalling that he does not want to answer any more personal questions.
We eat in silence for the next few minutes. I sneak a glance at Jeet who clearly seems to be enjoying the meal.
And again, for reasons unknown, my heart swells with happiness - Jeet actually likes my food.
We finish our lunch and head up back to our department. While waiting for the lift to arrive, I can see from the corner of my eye that Jeet is observing me.
I turn to him and smile. He gives a tight smile but it doesn't reach his eyes. He looks in front, then without looking at me says, "Your husband is a lucky man."
I do a double take.
"Sorry? WHAT?"
Jeet turns to look at me again. "I mean your husband is a lucky man, that he gets to eat the delicious food you cook."
For a moment I did not catch on. What the heck is he talking about? What husband?
Then it all came back instantly. Janice, the rumors .. Jeet was standing there when she mentioned my 'husband.'
Oh yeah.. That !
