~Chapter V: Cheating Death~
Bookshelves fell over all around the room. Loud bangs echoed from the wooden door that protected us from whatever that was on the other side. The four of us stood speechless not knowing what was going on. The banging began to grow louder. I didn't know how much the wooden door would last.
"Great! Who the hell is banging on my door?" Anna's voice wasn't shaky and uneven like I would have expected it to be. I knew if I would have spoken, I would have sounded the opposite of her. She seemed more angry then afraid. The three of us watched as Anna moved closer to the door.
The door quickly flew open and what stood there was a man. Anna paniced and backed up with a scowl still on her face. The guy was wearing a jet black pinstripe suit with black shiny dress shoes. He had dark hair that reached his shoulders and covered most of his pale white face. His eyes were completely black and blood stained his clothes and jaw.
Anna backed up until she was just about a foot in front of me. Chris stood behind me while Ami stood by my side speechless.
"There you are kid!" The demon man stood in front of the door. He had his eyes glued to me with a deep smile on him face. His needle-like teeth were covered in fresh blood.
"What do you want?" Ami shouted towards him.
"Master Damien sent me. I'm only here to collect your dear friend's soul." He laughed. Anna's face was full of disgust. "Its only the right thing to do for killing my old friend Marie. And while I'm here I think I'll take your friends as well."
"That bitch Marie deserved to die!" Chris shouted. He gestured his fists to hide his fear. Anna walked closer to the door and stopped just inches away from the demon. He stopped smiling and stared into her eyes.
"And what the fuck are you going to do little girl?" He said.
"No matter how hard you try you will not enter my home. So why don't you go tell Damien that his work here is done and he can fuck off." Anna crossed her arms for a more dramatic effect as the three of us watched.
"Anna what are you doing?" I asked, worrying about her safety and sanity.
"You see the writings on the wall?" She whispered. "Its a protection spell. He cannot enter even if he wanted to." I looked around the room to examine the writings. Then I looked at the demon guy standing outside of the door. His eyes watched me as I turned to look at Anna.
"Even if the spell does protect us, we cannot stay in here forever." I said. Anna's expression changed. She stared at me for a tried moment, thinking of a plan. Possibly one to save us from that demon scum.
Ami took a few steps forward, eyeing the demon, as she joined our conversation.
"But if we go out there that thing will kill us!" Ami whispered loudly. Anna slowly walked over to the bed and sat down.
"If he wants you then let him have you. Its as easy as that." Anna jumped back up and walked over towards me. Ami and Chris gave her a look of disgust.
"What?" Me, Chris and Ami shouted in unison. My ears could not register what they were hearing.
"The ring." Anna said. She stopped just inches away from me and wrapped her arms around me. Hugging me tightly, she moved her mouth close to my ear and started whispering.
"Take off the Ring and kill him." It took me a while to understand what she was planing. Slowly she released me from her grip. I looked down at the Ring and back at the door. The demon man wasn't there anymore.
"Where did he go?" I asked. Eventhough he wasn't there anymore, it still didn't feel safe.
"He's still here." Anna replied.
I stood, staring at the door for a moment, trying to get my thoughts together. I started walking forward to the door as I looked Back. Ami and Chris's faces were full of worry. I knew both of them understood Anna's plan and what I really am. What I have become behind this ring on my finger.
When I reached the door, I hesitantly stuck my head out and looked around outside. It was very dark, almost completely black. There were no trees around except for one a few feet away from the house. Only dead yellow grass swayed from the cold winds in the distance. Stars glittered the silent black blue sky, adding a bit of dim light. The only decent light was the light reflected off the moon.
Barefoot, I walked out the door looking in every direction. I didn't see the demon at all. My body trembled in fear, not knowing when or where he might appear. I walked a few more feet and turned around to face the house.
"It took you long enough kid." I jumped as I heard the voice of a man close by. I looked up at the roof of Anna's house and spotted the demon man. He was casually sitting at the edge looking at me.
"You.. you really want my soul huh?" I stuttered, backing up a bit.
"That's what I'm here for kid. I'm just doing my damn job." he said, jumpping from the roof. "So how are we going to do this?"
I didn't know what he meant but I knew that I didn't have long before he attacked. I stood up straight with my arms at my side. I tried my best not to look afraid but I knew I wasn't fooling anyone.
"Well... I was hoping something like this." I said as I reached for my ring. The demon man watched me as it slid off my finger.
As soon as the ring fell to the ground, my vision tinted everything in red. Me hands began to grow. As they doubled in size, my fingers became razor sharp talons. My skin became cold and pale white. The demon man didn't seem to be threatened at all. His face had more of a confused expression.
"Wow. Very impressive." He said as he clapped his pale hands. He didn't have talons like Marie or me. He had normal human hands.
"You're really gonna fight me?" He asked. "Very well."
The demon started walking slowly towards me. I started running towards him and he raised his right hand. I watched as two black pointy rope-like vines shot from his fingertips and into my right shoulder pushing me against the tree. I shouted in pain as dark red blood ran down my arm. The wound hurt more than anything I have ever felt in my short life. It felt like it was on fire.
Tears filled my eyes as I tried to hold in the pain. With my vision blurred by tears, I watched the demon, he was still walking slowly over towards me.
"Still want to fight me?" He asked. I shouted as I tried to pull the vines out of my shoulder but they would not come out. They felt solid and very hot. There was nothing I could do to free myself.
"Get off of him!" I heard someone shout behind the demon. I looked up and saw Chris running towards the him followed by Ami and Anna.
Anna and Ami stopped running when the demon turned his head 180 degrees and spotted them. Chris kept running until he reached him, his face was fearless. He took his left fist and landed a punch on the demon man's jaw. The black rope-like vines retracted back into the demon's fingers as he turned his body and I fell to the ground. Dark red blood stained most of my shirt. Chris slowly backed up from the demon, staring into his black lifeless eyes.
"Stay away from him!" He yelled, gazing at me for a moment to make sure I was alright. The demon began walking towards him. Chris backed up, almost tripping over his feet, to get away.
"Chris! Take this!" Anna shouted. She snapped her finger and a long iron sword materialized in Chris's right hand. He looked confused for a second realizing what just happened. He took the sword into both of his hands as he struggled to carry it. The sword looked almost too heavy for him. The demon kept getting closer to him, but Chris stood his ground and held up the sword before him. With the demon distracted, Ami ran after me while Anna stood right behind Chris.
