(Y/n) wouldn't have believed it if she hadn't seen it.
She had returned to the same spot she left Gus earlier but now he wasn't there and so she walked around the grassy field.
"Gus! Gus Gus!" She clicked her tongue repeatedly to call his attention but no one came. "Where are you, Gus?"
Then she saw it.
Resting against a large tree was Bucky Barnes with Gus napping on his lap. She wouldn't have believed it if she hadn't seen it but now that she did, it looked like a postcard photo with the Avengers facility in the background. He was wearing a cap that covered his face and his legs were outstretched in front of him.
Wish you were here.
(Y/n) pulled out her phone and snapped a picture while biting her lip to prevent herself from chuckling that might wake them up.
Bucky opened his eyes – blueish grey, they were – and was surprised to find the owner standing in front of him with her hands clasped behind her and a grin on her kind face.
"Hey," she smiled.
Gus woke up as well and his tail wagged excitedly, glancing between his owner and his new playmate as though he was introducing them to each other.
"Nice man, meet (Y/n). (Y/n), meet nice man."
Bucky deeply wished she didn't catch him drooling all over her dog or snoring so loud that he woke himself up. They've only spoken to each other once before. She was with her ginger friend that day and they were moving in the new equipment from the old facility and she dropped a wrench from the box. He picked it up for her and she was the first one to introduce herself but they hadn't seen each other since. Or rather, she had not seen him.
He would watch her jog with the other agents, encouraging them and sometimes sparring with them outside. He always told himself that he was being creepy and that he should just walk up to her but then that would also look creepy.
"Hey," he replied. "Sorry, I...I didn't know he was your dog..."
"It's fine," (Y/n) said, waving her hand. "May I sit?"
Bucky nodded and she sat in front of him while Gus switched his attention to her, licking her face and sniffing her clothes.
"I hope he didn't give you much trouble."
"No, not at all. He's a great dog."
"He is," she said, placing a kiss on the top of Gus's head. "He's a real sweetheart. I met him when we were assigned to investigate this abandoned building. It looked like it could crumble at any second which made it a perfect hideout for any illegal activity. They found nothing, though. But I found a friend. Been inseparable ever since."
Bucky kept quiet, his shyness taking his tongue hostage.
"It must be very difficult for you to adjust. I can't imagine what's it like to be in your place. All this sudden advanced technology."
"It is difficult," he sighed. "One time, I broke a coffee maker 'cause I didn't know how to use the buttons. I just kept pressing and pressing and didn't realize it wasn't plugged the whole time."
(Y/n) laughed and shook her head.
What was he saying? He's embarrassing himself in front of her. She must think he was too stupid or one of those grandparents he had seen in cafes and restaurants, trying to use a touch screen phone. He wished he could crumple like paper and melt to the ground.
"Oh my goodness," she said. "That happened to me last week with the microwave."
Bucky felt relief wash over his skin as she shared her own embarrassing experience.
"I needed to heat Gus's food so I placed the can inside the microwave."
"The can? I thought that would ruin the microwave."
"Exactly." She said. "I threw it inside and pressed the buttons but it was unplugged."
"You didn't," Bucky said in disbelief.
"I did," (Y/n) snickered. "I plugged it and pressed the buttons again. The microwave smoked and sparked and I screamed. Everyone thought there was going to be a huge explosion in the pantry but it just set off the alarm and it got all our papers wet."
Now it was Bucky's turn to laugh. (Y/n) joined him and Gus was happy to see them getting along so well. They shared stories for a few more minutes and (Y/n) had gotten comfortable enough to sit beside him, their thighs pressing together.
Soon enough, Bucky started to remember his old memories. On most days, it was difficult. It was like a blurred door and he could not recall faces very well except for Steve's. He tried to share a story to her and she listened attentively but just before he could end it, he forgot what happened. It's like a forgotten punchline to a good joke. However, (Y/n) was patient throughout the story and her eyes watched him the whole time. When he forgot how it ended, she smiled at him and it gave him so much spark that he could almost feel it power his arm to punch the air like John Bender from the Breakfast Club.
The shy, tense air melted away and was replaced by a sweet tasting atmosphere between two new friends but what Bucky felt was a lot more than that. What he thought was a simple attraction had now transformed into a pleasant feeling he thought he had already lost a long time ago as they continued to swap stories. Minutes turned into hours and when the sky turned orange, like a child in the streets of Brooklyn, Bucky knew it was time to go home.
"I have to go back now for dinner," (Y/n) said. "Will I see you around?"
"Doll, you'll see too much of me around, you'll get sick."
"I don't think that's possible," (Y/n) smiled. "You're too interesting for me to get tired of."
"Well, then I guess I'll have to keep comin' back."
"You should," (Y/n) said. "Or else I'll have to crash into the Avengers facility just to look for you."
"I wouldn't mind," Bucky said. "That is, if you CAN crash."
"You don't know yet what I'm capable of," she winked, making Bucky laugh. After he settled down, he removed his baseball cap – which he always wore – and placed it on top of (Y/n)'s head, pulling it down tight to fit her head and brushed a lock of her hair over her ear.
"You take care, kid."
"You too, Bucky."
He lingered for a few more seconds to gaze into her eyes, sketching the little details of her face into his mind before finally nodding and turning to leave. (Y/n) bit her lip to stop herself from grinning too wide. She turned to take her leave as well when a thought crossed her mind.
"Bucky, wait!"
Bucky stopped and waited for her to reach him.
"I was wondering if you wanted to go out this weekend," she said. "My friends and I are going to Buffalo. Gus is coming too and I thought you might want–you might like...or maybe not but if you do–if you want to, you could..."
"I do," he smiled. "I'd love to."
(Y/n) blushed and nodded. "See you then. Meet me here at 5pm."
"Okay."
"Okay," she repeated. "Don't be late."
She stood on her tiptoes and thought about giving his cheek a kiss but seeing him look at her with a smile plastered on his face made her so nervous, she settled back on her heel once more.
"Bye," she said before they parted ways and looked back to each other before the dark enveloped their distant figures.
That night, (Y/n) wondered what would have happened if she gave him that kiss while Bucky stayed up til midnight, wondering why she stood so close and why his heart stopped as though something was supposed to happen between them.
