"I would scold you but I haven't seen that happen in awhile.""Scold me?" Romelle gasped for air, the adrenaline in her veins pushing against her thoughts and leaving her vision cloudy. Although the warmth of this strange home had become a safe haven, it quickly began suffocating her.
"That's what I said," the stranger confirmed. She locked the door and took her coat off fluidly. "So, I'm guessing your name isn't Anastasia?"
"No..." The two stood silently for a moment, the sharp brown eyes of the taller woman looking to the blonde expectantly. "Am I supposed to give you my name?"
"Well, it would be appreciated. I'm Gayle, if that helps."
"Uh, hi, Gayle– I just— You know, now that I think about it, I don't think it was such a good idea to come into a stranger's house. Or at least, Hunk told me it was a basic common sense rule here on Earth."
Gayle stared at Romelle for a second, realization pouring over her face. The stoic expression she had held so far cracked a teeny bit, a childish fascination shining through. "Oh, you're Altean, aren't you? I should have realized from the blue marks... and pointy ears."
"Yes. It takes most people awhile as well."
"Can you blame us?" Gayle chuckled a little, before the blank expression fell back over her features. "Us humans are really forgetful. And it feels like forever since your colony first settled here, washed away in history like everything else."
Silence; for the fourth time that night. It wasn't pounding this time, but instead caused by the victim herself as she watched Gayle with curiosity.
"I'm Romelle," she finally gave up the key to her past, her vision clearing and heart quieting down. "But, I still think I should be going."
"Listen," Gayle sighed. She waved her hand in a shooing motion, turning her body so that she could grab the house keys. "Do whatever you please, I'm not keeping you hostage. But I'm telling you after what just happened, the safest place is this house because whoever that was thinks there's six people in here." Romelle cringed, her fingers twitching as she went between decisions. "I'll stay on the other side of the house, away from you. You can leave anytime in the morning. Or right now, whatever."
Her footsteps were light as she walked away, fingers running roughly through her hair as to ease the neutral irritation. The blonde nodded to herself, bringing her arms close to her chest and looking around the now empty space.
"Okay. Just a few hours."
