never forget

what happens when
it all fades away
in the calm after the hurricane
when the damage is still there
but the storm has passed?

what happens when
we don't have to be be afraid anymore
when we are set free from our cage
but we have forgotten how to fly?

what happens when
we are allowed to move on
when the road is clear in front of us
but our feet won't take the steps?

when we have forgotten how to be normal
when we have gotten used to being chained
when we bonded over imprisonment 
until suddenly our sentence was up

so when a criminal is released
does he leave his past behind entirely?
does he decide to erase all of the memories
even though they have already been ingrained in him?

the past is painful
it leaves behind ugly scars
but the strength we gained from bearing them
is what makes each one a star in our constellations
as we all join together to make a beautiful galaxy

the scars remind us we can get through anything
that the worst of it is over
and we can finally be free
but we cannot move past the past
we take it with us to the the future

don't be afraid of who you once were
mold them into who you want to be
but
never forget them
