"Two cappuccino's?" I asked. The woman nodded. I punched in some numbers and rang up the receipt, handing it to her. She smiled just to be polite and walked away with her coffee.
"My pleasure..." I talked to the air and the unsaid gratitude of the woman before turning to restock the cups on the counter. The bell on the front door rang as I stacked the cups and retied my apron. I ducked under the counter to check the rest of the supplies.
"Could I get..."
I shot up, hitting my head on the overhang of the desk. I grimaced and rubbed my head, straightening so I could take another order.
"Milo?" I asked, but he looked at me as if I was the crazy one. Aware that my manager was sneaking up behind my shoulder, I tried to seem like I was working. "How may I help you?"
He looked at me for a second more, confused at why my tone changed, but not showing it.
"Two lemonades."
"Two? Who are you with?"
"You. When is your shift over?"
I stuttered at the direct response. "Ten minutes."
"I'll wait." He handed me his credit card and payed, and then he went to sit in the very corner of the small café, taking the lemonades with him. Utterly amazed and confused, I could only stare at him with my mouth open. I didn't notice my manager sneaking up on me.
"He isn't looking for a job, is he?" a hand on my shoulder scared me half to death, but my manager wasn't looking at me. She stared at Milo, much the same way that I did, but with more of a... longing in her eyes. Disgusted I shook her hand off my shoulder and turned away.
"No, Renee, he doesn't want a job."
"Well, if he ever needs one, just send him this way, honey." She bustled off with a sway of her hips to check on the customers, though I knew that she only wanted to talk to Milo. My feeling of disgust and annoyance increased as I watched her move to each table, talking quickly with everyone until she made it to Milo. I could practically hear her high-pitched voice and giggling laughter that she thought was so flirtatious. I scowled and stomped away to check on the back.
Ten minutes passed and so did my eight hour-long shift, and though Renee didn't want me to go, I left anyway.
I had almost forgotten that Milo was waiting for me, and I turned to go find him with somewhat reluctance. I had wanted to go to a movie with Ingot tonight.
Milo sat in the seat closest to the corner, a sugar packet in one hand and his phone in the other. His lemonade sat half-empty in front of him, the condensation from the ice gathering at the bottom. He seemed to be examining the ingredients on the sugar packet, though I didn't know that it had anything other than just sugar.
I sat down uninvited, and tentatively took a sip of the lemonade in front of me. His eyes made their way up to my face, and I took another sip, avoiding talking until the very last second.
"What did you need?"
"Who said I needed anything?"
I took another sip. He did the same. I could feel Renee's eyes burning a hole in the back of my head, but I ignored it. Milo stood. Relieved, I followed suit, walking after him as he left the café, and got into the car. Not knowing what to do, I got in the car with him, silently sipping my drink.
"Thanks for the lemonade."
He didn't say anything. I decided that he didn't want to talk, so I stayed silent. But why would he pick me up if he didn't have anything to say?
