It was yet another typical Sunday afternoon. Just me sitting in my bedroom watching a show. It was quite boring really, this was normally how I spent my weekends since I rarely ever go out. Sometimes I wished things could be different, but I wasn't exactly sure what I wanted. More friends to hang out with? A job? A boyfriend? Nothing too big, just something that could get rid of this boredom. I could feel my eyes beginning to close, and nearly fell asleep when I heard my phone go off. I sat up and saw that I got a text from my best friend Eliana.

ellie
hi kat! so my neighbors asked me
to babysit their children every night
this week from 8 to 9:30, but i'm
unable to do it because play practice
goes from 7 to 9:30. would you be
interested in babysitting for me??

kathryn
that depends. who am i babysitting for?

ellie
the nolands! you know them.

kathryn
yeah i do, i guess i can swing by the
place later and talk to them about it.

ellie
don't worry, i can tell them for you!
so are you sure you wanna do this for me?

kathryn
yeah sure i'll do it!

ellie
omg kat thank you!!!!
i owe you BIG. TIME.
i'll text you the details
again, THANK YOU SO MUCH!!

I sat there for a few minutes, actually thinking it over this time. It sounded like fun, but I've never babysat before, so I was a little nervous about taking the job. And despite knowing the Nolands for a few years, I have never met their children once. I started having second thoughts and was about to tell Eliana that I changed my mind, but she already texted me again before I could even pick up my phone. She said that The Nolands were okay with me babysitting, and I had to show up at the house every evening this week at 8 pm and stay there until 9:30. Plus they were going to pay me $15 when they get back. She also sent me the Nolands' phone numbers in case of an emergency. I guess there's nothing I could do about it now.

I left my house around 7:50 and arrived at the house just before 8. When I got there, I noticed the Nolands' car was already gone.

Have they left yet?

I walked up to the front door and rang the doorbell. A few moments later, a tall boy with dark brown hair opened the door. He looked more surprised to see me than I was to see him.

"Uh.. can I help you?" the boy asked.

"I'm babysitting the Noland children," I replied.

"Are you sure about that? Because the Nolands asked me to babysit."

"Um yeah, I'm sure. My best friend lives across the street and she was originally asked to babysit. But she's not available so she asked me to do it instead. May I come in?"

"Absolutely not." The boy stepped outside to block the entrance. "Besides, I don't understand why they'd ask you if they already asked me."

"I don't either. Ellie just asked me to do this for her, and the Nolands were alright with that. But nobody told me there was going to be company."

The boy frowned at me. He was about to say something when I heard a kid call out the name Shawn. The boy turned around and walked inside.

So this jerk's name is Shawn.

I followed Shawn inside. Standing in the living room were two children, a boy and a girl. The boy had light brown hair and the girl had blonde hair, and they both had beautiful blue eyes.

"You must be the other babysitter!" the girl exclaimed.

"Other?" I asked.

"My mom said we've been pretty rowdy lately, so she wanted to hire two babysitters," said the boy.

"Nobody told me that," said Shawn in an irritated voice.

"Me either," I said.

"My name is Carrie and I'm six! My parents are working late all week, so that's why we have to have someone watching us. This is my brother Jack!" said the girl.

"I'm eight years old," the little boy said.

"My name is Kathryn," I said.

"I love that name!" Carrie exclaimed. "You're so pretty! Isn't she, Jack? Doesn't she look like a princess?"

"She does!" said Jack.

Shawn rolled his eyes.

"Do you guys want to finish coloring now?" he asked.

"Yes!!!" the kids exclaimed, running towards the dining room.

Shawn pushed past me, causing me to step back and hit my side on the corner of a nearby table. He didn't even notice, unless he was pretending he didn't.

"Rude ass," I muttered and went into the dining room.

Jack and Carrie were sitting next to each other at the dining table, while Shawn was sitting across from them. The only spot left at the table was next to Shawn, but I didn't want to sit there. Instead, I took a stool from the kitchen and sat at one end of the table.

"Where's Eliana?" asked Jack. "I thought she was babysitting us."

"She has play practice all week, so she asked me to babysit for her," I replied.

"If only she asked someone else," I heard Shawn say quietly.

"Okay dude, what is your problem?" I snapped.

Carrie and Jack looked at me.

"Oh..sorry," I said, a little embarrassed.

"Please don't fight," said Carrie. "I want us to have fun."

"We were having fun until Kathryn got here," Shawn muttered, saying my name in a mocking tone.

I really wanted to snap at him again, but I didn't want to blow up in front of the children. I took a few deep breaths and managed to calm myself down. I couldn't believe I had to handle this for a whole week. If this continues, I might as well quit.

After a while, Carrie and Jack got tired of coloring so Shawn took them into the living room to play with Legos. I went into the kitchen to get juice boxes for the kids, then headed to the living room. As soon as I walked in, Shawn threw a lego which landed right in front of my foot, and I stepped on it. I dropped the juice boxes and let out a yell.

"Are you okay?" asked Jack.

"N-no!" I stuttered. "Shawn! You JERK!"

"Oops," Shawn sarcastically said, not looking up from the Legos.

I ran out of the living room and into a bedroom, slamming the door. I bit my lip, trying so hard not to cry. I didn't want this job anymore. I decided to text Eliana and tell her what was going on.

kathryn
i hate it here. this guy named shawn
is also at the house and he's been so
fucking rude ever since i got here. he
wouldn't let me in the house, he talks so
harsh, and i got hurt TWICE because
of him! in front of the children! i think
i'm just gonna quit this is so annoying.

ellie
wait why the fuck is he even there?
i thought you were supposed the
only one babysitting??

kathryn
they needed another babysitter
since jack and carrie are so rowdy.
can you find someone else to babysit?

ellie
i would but i can't find anyone
else who would take this job, i'm
really sorry kat :(
just ignore shawn.
he can be a jerk at first but maybe
if you get to know him he won't be
all that bad!

kathryn
i don't wanna get to know him
and i don't want him here.

ellie
maybe he'll be gone tomorrow
just please keep this job kat
think about how much money you'll
be getting
and i don't know, at least you
have something to do?

She wasn't wrong. it's so boring staying at home, and this job would definitely keep me busy. Plus there was a necklace I've been wanting to buy and this job could even help me get it.

kathryn
fine i'll stay
but shawn better not come back

I shoved my phone in my pocket and headed towards the living room. I wasn't in the mood to socialize anymore, so I sat on the couch and read a magazine.

At 9:00, it was time for the kids to go to bed. Shawn took Jack to his room, while I took Carrie to hers.

"Kathryn, do you hate Shawn?" Carrie asked as I tucked her into bed.

"We're not getting along, that's for sure," I replied.

"Why?"

"I don't know. He started it all."

"I hope you guys get along."

"No promises. Goodnight."

I turned off the light and went back to the living room. Shawn was sitting on the recliner, watching a movie. I sat down on the couch and continued to read the magazine until it was time to go. Right when the clock read 9:30, I put my shoes on and headed towards the door. Shawn just watched me leave. As I got into my car, I saw the Nolands pull up into the driveway. I wasn't in the mood to talk to anyone, so I just backed out and drove home. I decided to get the money tomorrow, if I even come back.
