I walked into this room, and I smelt something familiar. But I didn't acknowledge it and went to go sit down in a seat in the back of the room. My teacher, Ms. Ellingboe came to my seat and said, "Hi, how are you?" I said I was fine and she walked away. 'She seemed to be very nice.' I thought to myself. Then it hit me. 'Oh! I remember her from elementary school. I saw her a few times at lunch' I said in my head.
I waited there for a minute and then the bell rang. Everyone else found a seat and sat down. Ms. Ellingboe started the class with a lecture. She talked about how there was a contest last year for everyone's writing. That someone from our school got second place.
She said our writing was going in the contest this year, that we had to pick our Michigan hero. We had to close our eyes then and think about what our Michigan hero was going to be. So I did.
I pictured my family first. I thought about my mom who got a new job, but I thought no because she just started it. Next I thought of my grandpa who acts a lot like a dad. I decided no because he isn't my dad. None of them fit good for my Michigan hero. Finally, I started thinking of my friends, then... RINGGG!!!!!!! The bell rang and we all had to go home.
All night I was thinking and thinking about who my Michigan hero would be. I got to school the next day and saw her. She walked by me, she was going to her locker. She had short, black hair, that kind of shined in the light. She was wearing these little hoop earrings and some very nice clothes. Her name was Jenie. I know it's a long name, but it's different like her.
Jenie seemed perfect for my Michigan hero. Jenie cared about everyone. Even the ones who didn't like her. But that day when I met her was a day like no other. One of the best.
The day started off when I was having a bad day. When it started I wasn't Jenie's friend at the time. It was in gym class, and since I had no friends in that class, she became my friend. She said something that cheered me up that day. Something that I will remember, "You will get through it, don't worry." Now I know it doesn't seem like much but that was the world to me. Since then I've changed. I've been doing new things like making new friends, and helping others, teaching them to do the right thing.
So now I say, "Do something great today, and don't worry what happens tomorrow."
I'm grateful for a friend like Jenie. She helped me. One day I'll help her.
Thank you Jenie for being a great friend and my Michigan hero!
