Chapter 7
Luke was walking from one hallway to another with such speed it was hard for me to keep up. Honestly what was wrong with this guy? One second he’s all in for my attention and the next one he’s storming off to god knows where! After some more running he stopped at a dead end…well… if you don’t count the window. Oh… hell no!
“Will we have to jump?” I asked, not entirely sure that’s a good idea. Okay, hundred percent sure it’s a bad idea, what if it doesn’t work and we die!
“No, of course not, it’s a bit closer than that.” He then kicked the wall under the window and suddenly got sucked right in to the… floor? I took a step forward and found myself falling. Yes, falling-butterflies in my stomach and everything, it was quite scary actually.
I landed on my butt. I can’t help it that I’m so graceful. Not. I wasn’t even surprised when I saw Luke a bit further laughing his ass off.
“Oh, shut it!” I growled while getting up and soothing my poor butt, which made him laugh even more. We were standing in a weird place. It reminded me of a rooftop only you couldn’t see the houses, and clouds were the weird kind of grey. They almost looked light purple.
“Where are we?” I asked still looking around. The ground was rough and so long I couldn’t see the end of it, only the sides. I could tell we were outside, and high up, but that was about it.
“Training place, Satan had this part of hell created especially for Collector needs.” Luke shrugged.
“Good to know.” I murmured. Satan was kind of a touchy subject for me, I’m not sure why but I didn’t like it when he was mentioned so casually.
“So, I think we should start with jumping.” Luke looked pretty confident, like he had done this before.
“Do I have a choice?” I asked putting on my best “don’t care” look. I will probably embarrass myself a lot today.
Out of nowhere, and I mean nowhere, white marks appeared on the one side of the floor. Or roof, whatever, I will name it roof. Numbers, I realized when I took a few steps closer.
“These will tell you how many meters you have jumped, let’s start with something easy, say, thirty.” Luke said and jumped, or more like flew. I stared at him wide eyed when he landed smoothly on his feet pretty far away from me. No way will I be able to do this! I barely jumped one meter, but thirty? Is that even possible for a human? Is he some kind of mutant?
“It’s all in your head Chrystal! Don’t think about what you can or cannot do, just jump, try to get as close to me as you can.” He yelled. I closed my eyes. I can… I can try. I took a few steps back for starters, and then, I jumped. I didn’t reach Luke, of course not, there was still a lot of space between us, but I had gotten closer. Still, I was disappointed. I knew this wouldn’t work.
“I couldn’t do it Luke.” I said looking at him…smiling? Why was he smiling? I failed.
“Oh, really? Look at how many meters you’ve jumped.” He said smugly.
I turned my attention to the numbers at the side. -17. I had jumped seventeen meters? Is that even possible… for a human?
“This is impossible! No way I… I couldn’t have…” I choked out. Luke was next to me now. Well he always found a way of invading my private space.
“Not bad, for your first time, not bad at all, I could even say I’m impressed.” He said and looked fascinated… or so I thought. “Okay, do it again, and this time, land on your feet.”
Oh, yes, did I mention I managed to pull off an almost-faceplant? Hey! I lost balance, that’s not my fault, and it wasn’t really that clumsy. Okay it was, whatever…
Luke was a terrible coach. Or maybe terribly good… no probably not, he was terrible. He made me jump, and jump, and jump and then jump again. I don’t know how many days or hours had passed or what he was thinking because for now his favorite word seemed to be “Again”. My knees were getting wobbly from the pressure but I didn’t want to seem weak, I was exhausted and there was a wet line of sweat on my forehead and probably on my back too.
Okay, this one last time, you can do it Chrystal. I closed my eyes and slowly dragged myself back at the zero mark. I will not fail in front of him. I thought, determined to finish this lesion, I was at the twenty-third meter by now, and I was almost desperate to reach the magic thirty by today. I took all that’s left of my energy and jumped. I landed on my feet and then nausea took over and I got very, very dizzy.
Just in time, two strong arms caught me and steadied me. I looked up and saw a greenish-blue pair of eyes looking at me with worry.
“Don’t look at me like that, you’re the one who made me go trough all this torture.” I said accusingly. Attack is the best defense. They don’t say that for nothing.
Luke narrowed his eyebrows, but then his face softened. “Wait, you did eat something except those fries today right?” he asked. He noticed what I was eating? What?
“No I didn’t…”
“You’re an idiot.” His eyes were soft and somehow, I wasn’t offended by his insult. He was still holding me by my elbows so I just enjoyed looking at his face. He was so nice to look at, I sighed. Even in this weird world he was beautiful, his hair was messed up in a perfect kind of way, and I know I could just stare at him for days.
“Your eyes are the color of the clouds…” He murmured to himself and I got a very nice feeling deep in my stomach. He then quickly let me go and straightened up. “You have to eat more from now on, I should have thought about that before, it’s time to end today’s lesion anyways.” Without waiting for my response he closed his eyes and murmured some words in a language I didn’t understand and then I was being pulled upwards.
It was a disgusting feeling and I had to hold on to a wall when it ended. We were back in school, in the same hallway with the same window. The only difference was that it was noticeably darker outside now.
“How long did we train?” I asked.
“Three or four hours” He said with a shrug. “We better get going, I have a party to attend to and you’re coming with me.” He gently pushed me towards the end of the corridor. I was still in a sort of daze. “Three or four” hours? He made me suffer there “Three or four” hours?
“Ohhh, I hate you, I hate you so much right now” I said in a bitter voice and then smiled my most evil looking smile. Did I tell you I’m freakishly good at those? Luke suddenly seemed uncomfortable.
“Why are you looking at me like that? It’s creepy” He said obviously avoiding my gaze, and my whole face for that matter. We were still in one of the dark hallways but were now walking towards the exit. I must look proper scary now, but he put me trough hell, literally.
“Stop smiling, it’s freaking me out, you said you hated me why are you smiling” He was shooting me nervous glances waiting for my facial expression to change. Just as expected. After a few moments I decided it was time to end his torture and stopped looking at him.
“Tantalize me like that again, and that face will be the first thing you see in the middle of the night” I told him my evil plan. Okay going in his room and smiling at him creepily wasn’t exactly your average evil plan, but then again, I’m dead, I can do what I want.
“Oh, so we’re getting laid then?” He asked half-smiling. How did he came to that conclusion?.., ohh…
“Oh so that’s what you think…hehe” I looked at him with another creepy expression and then laughed too myself.
“I don’t care that you’re acting like a creepy weirdo, you’re still going to that party with me” His voice was final. Damn him, I’m anti social, didn’t he notice that?
“Who said I’m acting?” I hissed in frustration but he was already out. Leaving me all alone, in the school. “Hey, wait up!” I yelled after him and started to run. This was going to be one hell of a party.
