― KIERNAN HATHAWAY KNEW better than most people the consequences of saying the wrong thing in a world like theirs. Once upon a time, she'd had a simpler life. One where her family was safe and well fed; not too wealthy but so poor that they found it difficult to get by. That was enough for them until her older brother was reaped for the Hunger Games and died at the hands of Gamemakers.
After that, Kiernan found it hard to overlook the injustice that the districts were faced with. She became angry and bitter and in accordance became reckless. Seeking revenge for her brother, she joined a group of renegades and outlaws seeking to bring down the hierarchy. She was so blindsided by her need for justice that she didn't see when she was running right into trouble.
When a scheme to assassinate the president took a wrong turn, Kiernan ended up being captured in their Capitol's grasp. She was tortured and hurt for information for the location of her allies and the key to bringing them down but Kiernan did not break. Not to save herself. The president decided to involve the one thing that she cared about; he threatened to kill her family and Kiernan had no choice. She gave away all of their secrets of the Order and gave the Capitol what they wanted.
In the end, it didn't matter. The president killed every last member of her family to send a message and took her tongue turning her into an Avox. In order to keep an eye on her, he forced her to work as a servant, taking care of the needs of various tributes. A different form of torture. To be so close to her cause and to be unable to do anything about it.
Kiernan found a way to survive, putting all of her thoughts down in words and keeping her head down in order to survive. Until a new tribute was reaped. A boy by the name of Finnick Odair with the universe on the tip of his tongue and storms in his eyes.
- ⎰ NOTES.⎱ ― I've been trying to figure out non cliche, non-tribute plots for Hunger Games and I have a bunch.
― This is sort of loaded since obviously there's a lot going on. You could have it in parts before she's an avox, and then another part where she meets Finnick in the brief time before his games and they spend a lot of time together. The third part can be an AU where they somehow meet later but he's different from what she remembers because of the games and you can combine this with letters she wrote to him during the games.
― They communicate by writing words down and Finnick definitely tries to learn sign language just so he can talk to her. If you have any more questions, just let me know.
