At last, the two dog brothers reached the end of the conveyer belt. By then, Max and his stomach were finally making amends. The terrier rolled over onto his side. Duke, meanwhile, was struggling to his paws. Stumbling around, the giant mutt headed over to the window. Gazing out it, he sighed. "You okay?" Max asked quietly, getting to his own paws.
"Max, do you think... Fred will remember me?" Duke asked, a faint whimper in his voice. Padding over and sitting down beside his brother, Max reassured him, "Of course he'll remember you. He's your owner. He loves you."
"But he never came for me when I was in the pound..." Duke mumbled. Max didn't have an answer for that right away. He quickly and quietly prodded around in his brain for a possible answer. But his mind was too clustered with thoughts of the sausages he had eaten earlier. Shaking himself, Max listened to his heart instead. And he found the right words to say.
"Duke, I know for a fact your owner loves you. You wanna know why? Because the universe said so. It was fate that brought the two of you together in the first place. I don't know why he hadn't come to the pound but he has to be worried sick about you," Max told his brother. Smiling, Duke murmured, "Thank you Max, I needed that."
"There you are!" a voice almost snarled. Looking up, Max and Duke realized with horror that the two animal control officers from before had arrived. However, they didn't look too well. "Max, come on!" Duke barked, running for the door. Max didn't need to be told twice as he dashed across the floor. On the way out, the larger canine accidently knocked over some pretty big boxes of sausages that came tumbling down, blocking the path for the officers.
Upset, one of the officers threw down their pole in frustration.
