They arrive at the crime scene twenty minutes later, Nikki's heart sinks when she looks at the scene from behind the cars. "Jack!" She breathes uncomfortably.
Jack climbs into his forensic overalls and turns and looks at Nikki. Jack looks beyond Nikki and notices the crime scene also.
He takes Nikki's hand's and smiles, he places a caring kiss on her forehead and pulls her into a hug, "Do you want me to get another pathologist? you don't have to do this" Jack says reassuringly.
Nikki takes a deep breath in and closes her eyes for a second, "I should be fine" She replies as she opens her eyes and breathes out.
Jack kisses Nikki's head again and then lets her get into her overalls, Nikki grabs her forensic kit. They walk over to the police tape and show their ID's before stepping under the tape and walking towards the crime.
Nikki looks around at the bodies lying in the road and holds her breath as she notices a pram just like her own for Poppy, "Jack!" Nikki freezes and turning her back.
"Ahh you must be from the Lyell" a voice speaks as he approaches the couple.
"Yeah, Jack Hodgson and this is Dr. Nikki Alexander" Jack replies for Nikki.
"DCI Llyod Chapman, Hit and run, multiple injuries six dead and two taken to hospital in a serious condition. Youngest dead... a female baby" the DCI speaks.
Nikki looks at Jack and bites her lip, "Sorry DCI Chapman could you just give us a moment" Jack speaks and Lloyd nods, He pulls Nikki to a side, "Let me check" He speaks and squeezes her arm reassuringly.
Jack leaves Nikki and walks over to the crime scene, He takes a deep breath as he walks amongst the dead. He walks to the pram and uncovers the small body and looks at the baby, before covering it back up and walking to Nikki.
"So?" Nikki asks as he walks to her.
"It isn't Poppy" He smiles as he strokes her cheek.
Nikki looks up at him and smiles before leaning forwards and kissing him, "Get a room" DCI Chapman shouts. Nikki and Jack pull away from the kiss and laugh, they head straight down to business and number all the bodies and take detailed notes on each victim.
When Nikki gets to the baby and starts to take notes on her dictaphone Jack notices her struggling to even look at the baby, this was something new he had never seen before from Nikki.
She has had children on the mortuary slab before but this is different behavior from Nikki. "Nikki?" Jack speaks as he walks over to her.
Nikki doesn't reply and continues to crouch above the baby. "Nikki? Nikki? Nicola!" Jack says loudly and finally, Nikki looks up at him.
"What?" She asks.
"I'm getting Thomas to replace you, step down Nikki, you clearly can't deal with this case," Jack says rising above Nikki.
She stands up and continues to write in the initial reports block and then looks up at Jack, "I am fine Jack" She says putting on a fake smile.
"Nikki?" He says raising an eyebrow knowing full well Nikki isn't dealing with this infant death very well, especially considering she had given birth to her own daughter six months prior to this.
As soon as the private ambulances arrive for the bodies, Nikki and Jack pack up and leave the police to their jobs. "Come on Nikki, speak to me. I have never seen you act like that before" Jack smiles.
"Just too close to home, I miss her Jack... I want to be with her right now. Cuddling her, smelling that wonderful baby smell she still has, looking at her infectious smile, admiring her beautiful little face, her perfect tiny hands. I want to be with our beautiful daughter" Nikki replies with a smile as they get back to Jack's card and place all the kit in the boot of his car.
"Beautiful words. I agree I would love to be at home with Poppy. Something just right about our little family, If I could get by without working I would spend every day with her and my beautiful girlfriend" He replies as he removes his overalls.
Nikki smiles happily as she undresses and places all her notes carefully in the boot of the car. "Tonight, we cook dinner, I shall feed Poppy. We can bath her together, then once Poppy has had all the cuddles we can possibly give her we shall put her down for the night... and I suggest a bottle of wine" Nikki smiles.
Jack laughs and nods as he climbs into the car, "Oh I do love you Nikki" He replies.
He starts the engine and they sit there for a moment, "Good thing I love you too" She giggles.
"Okay, back to the Lyell? I shall make a start on the paint from the car and get Clarissa to check CCTV in the area... and you pathologists can do whatever you actually do" Jack laughs.
"We actually do a lot" She smiles.
"Oh what? Sit around and act smart every time we forensic scientists make a discovery" Jack flirts.
"Oh shut your face Jack, Anyone can become a forensic scientist" Nikki chuckles as Jack reverses the car and pulls away.
"And where did they find you? Did they pull you off the streets like 'she will do?' Because I have no idea how you got this job" He teases.
Nikki looks at Jack open-mouthed and hits his arm playfully, "Oi, I'm driving. do you want us to both... end up at work?" He laughs.
"Oh funny you are, real comedian" Nikki replies with a frown, she knows he is playing with her but she just wants to test him.
"Oh you love me, Nikki, admit it" Jack laughs as he focuses on the road and drives them safely back to the Lyell Centre.
