Marianne was not expecting anyone. It must be the postman at the door.
‘Jack! The kids are not here. They went out …’
‘Caitlin is divorcing me, Marianne,’ Jack interrupted her, pleading with his eyes. ‘Please, I need a place to stay.’
Marianne stepped aside and held the door open for Jack to come in without saying anything. She suddenly hugged him.
‘I’m so glad you are finally free from that nightmare. You’ve been through hell and I knew you were innocent all the time.’
Marianne and Jack talked about everything all day, in the house, driving around, and walking down the beach. Marianne was angry at times, happy at times, crying at times, and laughing at times, with Jack following her around like a puppy begging and apologizing profusely.
‘It hasn’t changed a thing. I’ve been away for ten years and it has changed nothing for us. Has it, Marianne, though I don’t deserve it?’ Jack pleaded, putting his arms around her.
‘Well, you had two girlfriends and a fling, and I was dating Martin by the time you came back,’ she accused.
‘But we were strong enough to find each other again. You are the love of my life, the only thing that makes sense. It has always been you,’ he said earnestly, holding her like she could disappear any minute.
‘There’s been a mentally disturbed murderess, a sociopath, and an heiress wife. Which one was the fling?’ he joked.
He stopped her answer by pulling her to himself and burying her face in his chest the way she liked.
