We all head back to the hotel and the chilling cold evening air complimenting our warm bodies, we arrive and we talk to Samuel regarding Jess's state,
"Wait I will go call her" Jake offers
While we sit by the oak tree carved table and the fur styled carpet tickling at our bare feet. We are soon interrupted by Jake who runs in panting
"What happened!?" Hannah Asks mirroring our exact thoughts.
"It's Jess!...she..is gone"Jake replied and a look of concern sips Into our faces.
Tears rolling uncontrollably from my eyes and I fail to stop the cry that escapes from deep inside.
"Maybe it has something to do with the bite" Hannah suggests
"No!. It's those monsters! They took her from me...they took her from us!. I will kill everyone of them" I snap in anger
"Bobby... that's a suicide mission if you ask me. How about we first find a way to get more of the cure and use it on as many monsters as we can" Hannah suggests while adjusting her glasses.
"You don't have to ask me twice, I'm with Hannah on this one" Jake states
And Katlin nods in agreement, outnumbered I also agree with them
"One more problem" Jake utters and we all turn In looks of confusion
"Wasn't Jess the only one who knew where the person that discovered the cure is?" Jake continued
" with the small sample we have left I think I can generate a cure, an even stronger one" Hannah shoots back and smiles with a hint of sass evident.
"One problem though, the chemicals and equipment " she continues.
We all look in confusion obviously lost as to what she is talking about.
"Guys we need to head to Pietermaritzburg. First thing in the morning, there is a lab with all the things I'll need to make more of the cure" Hannah says, obviously showing off with her intelligence
"That's actually a good idea, considering that we don't get into trouble with our friends"Jake laughs at his joke sarcastically and we head to bed
The next morning
We all got up, everyone was ready except me. Who was still finding my way around the huge hotel sluggishly.
We got into the car first thing after we had breakfast, our hearts hammering as to what lies ahead,
"Maybe they haven't made their way to Pietermaritzburg" Jake states.
"Well they aren't as slow as you, that's for sure" Kaitlin giggles.
And
After 2hours of speeding through the highway,
We finally see it in sight.... Pietermaritzburg
We head off the highway into the city with streets going in every direction, the blood stains splattered in almost every windows pane on every store gives it an eerie feeling
We are being followed.
I quickly check my useless phone for any service but nothing, we hurry over to the antics shop and dig through the pile of scattered Items covering the granite tiles.
That's when Jake spots a map..
"Jackpot!" he yells
"We would prefer you don't let our little puppies and bloodthirsty mosquito's know we are in town"Hannah warns out.
Jake hands over the map to Hannah and
We all Stand upright and wait in anticipation as to what Hannah will say next.
"Right. So we are here", she points out at the map "so if we walk out using the back door, and got through this alley we should pop up on Anderson street, considering that there is a butchery up the road, I don't think we should head that way, that's a no brainier, so the lab is to the east, we will take the alley between Mr.Price and KFC. Following that root. We should be right behind the lab... understand?
We all stare in confusion and evidently lost
"Yeah so...what I'm trying to say is. Follow my steps" she says rolling her eyes and pulling out the curved tip knives ...if you ask me she might as well date them
We slip into the first alley undetected and we reach the end of the alley, there was a main road, and just to our left, up the road was a pack of werewolves and just as Hannah predicted, they were ravaging the butchery
We run silently, not wanting to make any noise, crossing the main road into the second alley and just as we thought we are out of harm's way, Katlin let's out a sneeze to be heard for miles.
Then everything goes quiet...
A thing we have accustomed with danger ever since the infection started to spread.
We hold our guard and nearly 10min later....nothing
"You were all worried about nothing" Katlin says in relief
"No. They are alert, they know we are here, so we better move faster" Hannah proclaims
Silence still filling the atmosphere and embracing all of us with fear.
We begin to notice every small detail and from time to time we would flinch when a rat pops out or if the scattered news papers danced along the cold breeze
We soon reach the end of alley and see the wolves guarding all the streets and blocking the entrance to our way to the lab...all roads were blocked except one road.
"Wait there's a road unblocked. Let's use that one" I suggest
"No wait!, Don't you get it? They evolved again, this time they are thinking, we can't go through there, that's where they want us to go, we can't take that route"Hannah suggests while wiping the blade reflecting the sunlight into her eyes
" Well what ever you come up with make it fast, I don't think the werewolves walking up this alley are here to welcome us to their friendly neighbourhood". Jake says pointing at four werewolves walking in the distance.
We slip into a café through the back door, and before anyone notices, Jake throws a knife and it lends itself in a werewolf's head as it falls with a thud.
We all look in astonishment and he stares back and says "I been watching Hannah do it for so long i guess I caught on"
We all proceed towards the front entrance which is directly opposite the alley leading to the lab,
"I got an idea" Katlin remarks
"Now would be the best time to share it with the rest of the group" I reply
"What if we split up?" Kaitlin's eyes begin to light up
"Urm... throughout my experience of watching. Horror movies, splitting up is not such a good idea"Jake adds
"But...there are two alley's and four of us, if we split up into two teams we will cover more ground and clear all the alley's, plus they wouldn't expect it" Katlin concludes
"That's actually a good idea, OK. I'll take Katlin and we will take the first alley, Bobby and Jake you guys take the other alley, is that OK? Hannah asks
We all nod in agreement and proceed, there are two werewolves guarding each alley.... We wait till Hannah and Katlin disappear behind the corners before we head our direction..
"OK, since we don't really know how to throw knives..."I pause as Jake interrupts
"Well at least one of us"..I roll my eyes at him and continue with my sentence, " I think we should get close enough for me to go behind it and Stab it from behind. And you throw the knife aiming at the other wolves chest.
"OK " he says
Then we do just as we had planned...
Then all of a sudden. The whole city dies out...
"Seriously!?, The universe has the worst timing ever!" Jake complains.
"I think this is the universe's way of telling us to hurry up" I say intuitively
With the lab just at sight we hear a scream from the other alley
"Shit! Hannah!, Jake... quickly go get the lab door open, I'll go get the others,"I quickly sprint off to find the other two girls, i jolt towards the other alley, my heart pumping faster, I don't think at all, just working on pure adrenaline pushing me to go forward, I pull out my old kitchen knife, not suitable for throwing but good enough for piercing into flash, I reach the alley and start shouting out for the girls.
Silence.
I get no response, tears fill my eyes and I proceed deeper in the dark alley with nothing but the stars to light the eerie path ahead, I shout again and I hear a whimper from a distance, its coming from beneath me...
Its a manhole.
I open the metal lid enclosing the man hole and jump inside, sewer's clean from the lack of human presence, but the stench churning my stomach uncontrollably,
And a lone tear rolls down my ashen cheeks
As thoughts of what might have happened to my friends flood my head, I'm soon lost inside the dark chambers and a large scream erupts from the left...I quickly find my way towards the source with nothing but my hands to guide me.
After a while I see a flash from a distance..."that's Hannah's flashlight". I run towards it and shout out at her, she turns my direction and shouts out me.
Before I get a chance to ask her what happened she drops into tears and tells me everything
"T-they were everywhere!, and I lost Katlin, i was so scared, I tried and I tried but...it was just too many, I jumped into this manhole and I started running, I'm sorry, I'm terribly sorry...we shouldn't have split up" still in tears and clearly claustrophobic.
"Wait where are the monsters now?" I anxiously ask, she raised her fists covered with blood and turning blue due to bruises,
"Wait, you killed them with your bare hands?" I ask in shock.
"Well with the help of my two babes" she says as she rips the knives off two dead vampire carcasses.
And
We quickly make our way to the top.
